Leviticus 1:5

Context
1:5 Then the one presenting the offering 1  must slaughter the bull 2  before the Lord, and the sons of Aaron, the priests, must present the blood and splash 3  the blood against the sides of the altar which is at the entrance of the Meeting Tent.

Leviticus 8:31

Context
8:31 Then Moses said to Aaron and his sons, “Boil the meat at the entrance of the Meeting Tent, and there you are to eat it and the bread which is in the ordination offering basket, just as I have commanded, 4  saying, ‘Aaron and his sons are to eat it,’

Leviticus 12:6

Context

12:6 “‘When 5  the days of her purification are completed for a son or for a daughter, she must bring a one year old lamb 6  for a burnt offering 7  and a young pigeon or turtledove for a sin offering 8  to the entrance of the Meeting Tent, to the priest.

Leviticus 16:16-17

Context
16:16 So 9  he is to make atonement for the holy place from the impurities of the Israelites and from their transgressions with regard to all their sins, 10  and thus he is to do for the Meeting Tent which resides with them in the midst of their impurities. 16:17 Nobody is to be in the Meeting Tent 11  when he enters to make atonement in the holy place until he goes out, and he has made atonement on his behalf, on behalf of his household, and on behalf of the whole assembly of Israel.

Leviticus 17:4-5

Context
17:4 but has not brought it to the entrance of the Meeting Tent 12  to present it as 13  an offering to the Lord before the tabernacle of the Lord. He has shed blood, so that man will be cut off from the midst of his people. 14  17:5 This is so that 15  the Israelites will bring their sacrifices that they are sacrificing in the open field 16  to the Lord at the entrance of the Meeting Tent to the priest and sacrifice them there as peace offering sacrifices to the Lord.

1 tn Heb “Then he”; the referent (the offerer) has been specified in the translation for clarity. The LXX has “they” rather than “he,” suggesting that the priests, not the offerer, were to slaughter the bull (cf. the notes on vv. 6a and 9a).

2 tn Heb “the son of the herd”; cf. KJV “bullock”; NASB, NIV “young bull.”

3 tn “Splash” (cf. NAB) or “dash” (cf. NRSV) is better than “sprinkle,” which is the common English translation of this verb (זָרַק, zaraq; see, e.g., KJV, NASB, NIV, NLT). “Sprinkle” is not strong enough (contrast נָזָה [nazah], which does indeed mean “to sprinkle” or “to splatter”; cf. Lev 4:6).

4 tn Several major ancient versions have the passive form of the verb (see BHS v. 31 note c; cf. Lev 8:35; 10:13). In that case we would translate, “just as I was commanded.”

5 tn Heb “And when” (so KJV, NASB). Many recent English versions leave the conjunction untranslated.

6 tn Heb “a lamb the son of his year”; KJV “a lamb of the first year” (NRSV “in its first year”); NAB “a yearling lamb.”

7 sn See the note on Lev 1:3 regarding the “burnt offering.”

8 sn See the note on Lev 4:3 regarding the term “sin offering.”

9 tn Heb “And.” The Hebrew conjunction ו (vav, “and”) can be considered to have resultative or even inferential force here.

10 tn Heb “to all their sins.”

11 tn Heb “And all man shall not be in the tent of meeting.” The term for “a man, human being” (אָדָם, ’adam; see the note on Lev 1:2) refers to any person among “mankind,” male or female.

12 tn Smr and LXX add after “tent of meeting” the following: “to make it a burnt offering or a peace offering to the Lord for your acceptance as a soothing aroma, and slaughters it outside, and at the doorway of the tent of meeting has not brought it.”

13 tc Smr includes the suffix “it,” which is needed in any case in the translation to conform to English style.

14 sn The exact meaning of this penalty clause is not certain. It could mean (1) that he will be executed, whether by God or by man, (2) that he will be excommunicated from sanctuary worship and/or community benefits, or (3) that his line will be terminated by God (i.e., extirpation). See also the note on Lev 7:20.

15 tn Heb “So that which.”

16 tn Heb “on the faces of the field.”
