Joshua 17:1

Context

17:1 The tribe of Manasseh, Joseph’s firstborn son, was also allotted land. 9  The descendants of Makir, Manasseh’s firstborn and the father of Gilead, received land, for they were warriors. 10  They were assigned Gilead and Bashan. 11

1 tn Heb “All the people who went out from Egypt, the males, all the men of war, died in the desert in the way when they went out from Egypt.”

2 tn The Hebrew text adds “with fire.”

3 tn Heb “the treasury of the house of the Lord.” Technically the Lord did not have a “house” yet, so perhaps this refers to the tabernacle using later terminology.

4 tn Heb “they turn [the] back before their enemies because they are set apart [to destruction by the Lord].”

5 tn The second person pronoun is plural in Hebrew, indicating these words are addressed to the entire nation.

6 tn Heb “what is set apart [to destruction by the Lord] from your midst.”

7 map For location see Map1 A1; JP3 F3; JP4 F3.

8 tn The meaning of the Hebrew name “Misrephoth Maim” is perhaps “lime-kilns by the water” (see HALOT 2:641).

9 tn Heb “and the lot belonged to the tribe of Manasseh, for he was the firstborn of Joseph.”

10 tn Heb “to Makir, the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead, for he was a man of war.”

11 tn Heb “Gilead and Bashan belonged to him.”

sn On the assignment of Manasseh’s territory in Gilead and Bashan, see Josh 13:31.
