Joshua 2:14

Context
2:14 The men said to her, “If you 1  die, may we die too! 2  If you do not report what we’ve been up to, 3  then, when the Lord hands the land over to us, we will show unswerving allegiance 4  to you.” 5 

Joshua 3:13

3:13 When the feet 6  of the priests carrying the ark of the Lord, the Ruler 7  of the whole earth, touch 8  the water of the Jordan, the water coming downstream toward you will stop flowing and pile up.” 9 

Joshua 4:7

4:7 tell them how the water of the Jordan stopped flowing 10  before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the water of the Jordan stopped flowing. 11  These stones will be a lasting memorial for the Israelites.”

4:10 Now the priests carrying the ark of the covenant were standing in the middle of the Jordan until everything the Lord had commanded Joshua to tell the people was accomplished, in accordance with all that Moses had commanded Joshua. The people went across quickly,

Joshua 4:18

4:18 The priests carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord came up from the middle of the Jordan, and as soon as they set foot on dry land, 12  the water of the Jordan flowed again and returned to flood stage. 13

7:1 But the Israelites disobeyed the command about the city’s riches. 20  Achan son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, 21  son of Zerah, from the tribe of Judah, stole some of the riches. 22  The Lord was furious with the Israelites. 23 

Joshua 7:15

Context
7:15 The one caught with the riches 24  must be burned up 25  along with all who belong to him, because he violated the Lord’s covenant and did such a disgraceful thing in Israel.’”

Joshua 7:25-26

7:25 Joshua said, “Why have you brought disaster 26  on us? The Lord will bring disaster on you today!” All Israel stoned him to death. (They also stoned and burned the others.) 27  7:26 Then they erected over him a large pile of stones (it remains to this very day 28 ) and the Lord’s anger subsided. So that place is called the Valley of Disaster to this very day.

8:18 The Lord told Joshua, “Hold out toward Ai the curved sword in your hand, for I am handing the city 29  over to you.” So Joshua held out toward Ai the curved sword in his hand.

10:10 The Lord routed 30  them before Israel. Israel 31  thoroughly defeated them 32  at Gibeon. They chased them up the road to the pass 33  of Beth Horon and struck them down all the way to Azekah and Makkedah.

10:30 The Lord handed it and its king over to Israel, and Israel 34  put the sword to all who lived there; they 35  left no survivors. They 36  did to its king what they 37  had done to the king of Jericho. 38

11:6 The Lord told Joshua, “Don’t be afraid of them, for about this time tomorrow I will cause all of them to lie dead before Israel. You must hamstring their horses and burn 39  their chariots.”

11:8 The Lord handed them over to Israel and they struck them down and chased them all the way to Greater Sidon, 40  Misrephoth Maim, 41  and the Mizpah Valley to the east. They struck them down until no survivors remained.

11:23 Joshua conquered 42  the whole land, just as the Lord had promised Moses, 43  and he assigned Israel their tribal portions. 44  Then the land was free of war.

15:13 Caleb son of Jephunneh was assigned Kiriath Arba (that is Hebron) within the tribe of Judah, according to the Lord’s instructions to Joshua. (Arba was the father of Anak.) 45

18:8 When the men started out, Joshua told those going to map out the land, “Go, walk through the land, map it out, and return to me. Then I will draw lots for you before the Lord here in Shiloh.”

Joshua 19:51

19:51 These are the land assignments which Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the Israelite tribal leaders 47  made by drawing lots in Shiloh before the Lord at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 48  So they finished dividing up the land.

24:7 Your fathers 49  cried out for help to the Lord; he made the area between you and the Egyptians dark, 50  and then drowned them in the sea. 51  You witnessed with your very own eyes 52  what I did in Egypt. You lived in the wilderness for a long time. 53 

1 tn The second person pronoun is masculine plural, indicating that Rahab’s entire family is in view.

2 tn Heb “Our lives in return for you to die.” If the lives of Rahab’s family are not spared, then the spies will pay for the broken vow with their own lives.

3 tn Heb “If you do not report this matter of ours.”

4 tn Heb “allegiance and faithfulness.” These virtual synonyms are joined in the translation as “unswerving allegiance” to emphasize the degree of promised loyalty.

5 tn The second person pronoun is feminine singular, referring specifically to Rahab.

14 tc Heb “He said, “Neither.” An alternative reading is לוֹ (lo, “[He said] to him”; cf. NEB). This reading is supported by many Hebrew mss, as well as the LXX and Syriac versions. The traditional reading of the MT (לֹא, lo’, “no, neither”) is probably the product of aural confusion (the two variant readings sound the same in Hebrew). Although followed by a number of modern translations (cf. NIV, NRSV), this reading is problematic, for the commander of the Lord’s army would hardly have declared himself neutral.

15 sn The Lord’s heavenly army, like an earthly army, has a commander who leads the troops. For the phrase שַׂר־צְבָא (sar-tsÿva’, “army commander”) in the human sphere, see among many other references Gen 21:22, 32; 26:26; Judg 4:2, 7; 1 Sam 12:9.

16 sn The commander’s appearance seems to be for Joshua’s encouragement. Joshua could now lead Israel into battle knowing that the Lord’s invisible army would ensure victory.

17 tn Heb “Joshua fell on his face to the ground and bowed down.”

sn To make the city set apart for the Lord would involve annihilating all the people and animals and placing its riches in the Lord’s treasury (vv. 19, 21, 24).
