Joshua 10:19

Context
10:19 But don’t you delay! Chase your enemies and catch them! 11  Don’t allow them to retreat to 12  their cities, for the Lord your God is handing them over to you.” 13

1 tn Heb “remember the word which Moses, the Lord’s servant, commanded you.”

sn This command can be found in Deut 3:18-20. In vv. 13-15 Joshua paraphrases the command, as the third person reference to Moses in v. 14 indicates.

2 tn Heb “is providing rest for you and is giving to you this land.”

sn “This land” refers to the trans-Jordanian lands allotted to these tribes.

3 tn Heb “has given the land to you.” Rahab’s statement uses the Hebrew perfect, suggesting certitude.

4 tn Heb “terror of you has fallen upon us.”

5 tn Or “melting away because of.”

6 tn Both of these statements are actually subordinated to “I know” in the Hebrew text, which reads, “I know that the Lord…and that terror of you…and that all the inhabitants….”

7 tn Heb “the people.”

8 tn Or “the shout.”

9 tn Heb “for the Lord has given to you the city.” The verbal form is a perfect, probably indicating certitude here.

10 tn Heb “it”; the referent (the city of Ai) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

11 tn Heb “But [as for] you, don’t stand still, chase after your enemies and attack them from the rear.”

12 tn Or “enter into.”

13 tn Heb “has given them into your hand.” The verbal form is a perfect of certitude, emphasizing the certainty of the action.
