Jeremiah 2:26

Context2:26 Just as a thief has to suffer dishonor when he is caught,
so the people of Israel 1 will suffer dishonor for what they have done. 2
So will their kings and officials,
their priests and their prophets.
Jeremiah 5:27
Context5:27 Like a cage filled with the birds that have been caught, 3
their houses are filled with the gains of their fraud and deceit. 4
That is how they have gotten so rich and powerful. 5
1 tn Heb “house of Israel.”
2 tn The words “for what they have done” are implicit in the comparison and are supplied in the translation for clarification.
3 tn The words, “that have been caught” are not in the text but are implicit in the comparison.
4 tn Heb “are filled with deceit.” The translation assumes a figure of speech of cause for effect (metonymy). Compare the same word in the same figure in Zeph 1:9.
5 tn Heb “therefore they have gotten great and rich.”
