Jeremiah 1:5

Context

1:5 “Before I formed you in your mother’s womb 1  I chose you. 2

Before you were born I set you apart.

I appointed you to be a prophet to the nations.”

Jeremiah 49:30

Context

49:30 The Lord says, 3  “Flee quickly, you who live in Hazor. 4

Take up refuge in remote places. 5

For King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon has laid out plans to attack you.

He has formed his strategy on how to defeat you.” 6

1 tn Heb “the womb.” The words “your mother’s” are implicit and are supplied in the translation for clarity.

2 tn Heb “I knew you.” The parallelism here with “set you apart” and “appointed you” make clear that Jeremiah is speaking of his foreordination to be a prophet. For this same nuance of the Hebrew verb see Gen 18:19; Amos 3:2.

3 tn Heb “Oracle of the Lord.”

4 map For location see Map1 D2; Map2 D3; Map3 A2; Map4 C1.

5 tn Heb “Make deep to dwell.” See Jer 49:8 and the translator’s note there. The use of this same phrase here argues against the alternative there of going down from a height and going back home.

6 tn Heb “has counseled a counsel against you, has planned a plan against you.”
