Jeremiah 17:11
Context17:11 The person who gathers wealth by unjust means
is like the partridge that broods over eggs but does not hatch them. 4
Before his life is half over he will lose his ill-gotten gains. 5
At the end of his life it will be clear he was a fool.” 6
Jeremiah 20:5
Context20:5 I will hand over all the wealth of this city to their enemies. I will hand over to them all the fruits of the labor of the people of this city and all their prized possessions, as well as all the treasures of the kings of Judah. Their enemies will seize it all as plunder 7 and carry it off to Babylon.
Jeremiah 21:7
Context21:7 Then 8 I, the Lord, promise that 9 I will hand over King Zedekiah of Judah, his officials, and any of the people who survive the war, starvation, and disease. I will hand them over to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and to their enemies who want to kill them. He will slaughter them with the sword. He will not show them any mercy, compassion, or pity.’
Jeremiah 25:3
Context25:3 “For the last twenty-three years, from the thirteenth year that Josiah son of Amon was ruling in Judah 10 until now, the Lord has been speaking to me. I told you over and over again 11 what he said. 12 But you would not listen.
Jeremiah 25:33
Context25:33 Those who have been killed by the Lord at that time
will be scattered from one end of the earth to the other.

Jeremiah 28:14
Context28:14 For the Lord God of Israel who rules over all 14 says, “I have put an irresistible yoke of servitude on all these nations 15 so they will serve King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. And they will indeed serve him. I have even given him control over the wild animals.”’” 16
Jeremiah 29:19
Context29:19 For they have not paid attention to what I said to them through my servants the prophets whom I sent to them over and over again,’ 17 says the Lord. 18 ‘And you exiles 19 have not paid any attention to them either,’ says the Lord. 20
Jeremiah 29:21
Context29:21 “The Lord God of Israel who rules over all 21 also has something to say about Ahab son of Kolaiah and Zedekiah son of Maaseiah, who are prophesying lies to you and claiming my authority to do so. 22 ‘I will hand them over to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and he will execute them before your very eyes.
Jeremiah 34:21
Context34:21 I will also hand King Zedekiah of Judah and his officials over to their enemies who want to kill them. I will hand them over to the army of the king of Babylon, even though they have temporarily withdrawn from attacking you. 23
Jeremiah 35:14
Context35:14 Jonadab son of Rechab ordered his descendants not to drink wine. His orders have been carried out. 24 To this day his descendants have drunk no wine because they have obeyed what their ancestor commanded them. Jeremiah 44:30
Context44:30 I, the Lord, promise that 27 I will hand Pharaoh Hophra 28 king of Egypt over to his enemies who are seeking to kill him. I will do that just as surely as I handed King Zedekiah of Judah over to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, his enemy who was seeking to kill him.’”

4 tn The meaning of this line is somewhat uncertain. The word translated “broods over” occurs only here and Isa 34:15. It is often defined on the basis of an Aramaic cognate which means “to gather” with an extended meaning of “to gather together under her to hatch.” Many commentators go back to a Rabbinic explanation that the partridge steals the eggs of other birds and hatches them out only to see the birds depart when they recognize that she is not the mother. Modern studies question the validity of this zoologically. Moreover, W. L. Holladay contests the validity on the basis of the wording “and she does hatch them” (Heb “bring them to birth”). See W. L. Holladay, Jeremiah (Hermeneia), 1:498, and see also P. C. Craigie, P. H. Kelley, J. F. Drinkard, Jeremiah 1-25 (WBC), 229. The point of the comparison is that the rich gather their wealth but they do not get to see the fruits of it.
5 tn The Hebrew text merely says “it.” But the antecedent might be ambiguous in English so the reference to wealth gained by unjust means is here reiterated for clarity.

11 tn For the idiom involved here see the notes at 7:13 and 11:7.
12 tn The words “what he said” are not in the text but are implicit. They are supplied in the translation for clarity.
13 sn The intent here is to emphasize the large quantity of those who are killed – there will be too many to insure proper mourning rites and proper burial.
14 tn Heb “Yahweh of armies, the God of Israel.” See the study notes on 2:19 and 7:3 for this title.
15 tn Heb “An iron yoke I have put on the necks of all these nations.”
16 sn The emphasis is on the absoluteness of Nebuchadnezzar’s control. The statement is once again rhetorical and not to be taken literally. See the study note on 27:6.
17 tn See the translator’s note on 7:13 for an explanation of this idiom.

22 tn Heb “prophesying lies in my name.” For an explanation of this idiom see the study notes on 14:14 and 23:27.
23 tn Heb “And Zedekiah king of Judah and his officials I will give into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of those who seek their lives and into the hands of the army of the king of Babylon which has gone up from against them.” The last two “and into the hand” phrases are each giving further explication of “their enemies” (the conjunction is explicative [cf. BDB 252 s.v. וְ 1.b]). The sentence has been broken down into shorter English sentences in conformity with contemporary English style.
sn This refers to the relief offered by the withdrawal of the Babylonian troops to fight against the Egyptians which were coming to Zedekiah’s aid (cf. 37:5, 7, 11).
24 tn Heb “The words of Jonadab son of Rechab which he commanded his descendants not to drink wine have been carried out.” (For the construction of the accusative of subject after a passive verb illustrated here see GKC 388 §121.b.) The sentence has been broken down and made more direct to better conform to contemporary English style.
25 tn The vav (ו) plus the independent pronoun before the verb is intended to mark a sharp contrast. It is difficult, if not impossible to mark this in English other than “But I.”
26 tn On this idiom (which occurs again in the following verse) see the translator’s note on 7:13 for this idiom and compare its use in 7:13, 25; 11:7; 25:3, 4; 26:5; 29:19; 32:33; 35:14, 15; 44:9.
