Judges 21:3

21:3 They said, “Why, O Lord God of Israel, has this happened in Israel?” An entire 10  tribe has disappeared from Israel today!”

1 tn Heb “Take the meat…and put [it] on this rock.”

2 tn Heb “and he did so.”

3 sn Baal-Berith was a local manifestation of the Canaanite storm god. The name means, ironically, “Baal of the covenant.” Israel’s covenant allegiance had indeed shifted.

4 tn That is, took as its own possession.

5 tn Heb “Now.”

6 tn Or “dispossessed.”

7 tn Heb “will you dispossess him [i.e., Israel; or possibly “it,” i.e., the territory]?” There is no interrogative marker in the Hebrew text.

8 tn Heb “the cornerstones”; or “the supports.” The word is used of leaders in only three other texts – 1 Sam 14:38; Isa 19:13; Zech 10:4.

9 tn The words “which numbered” are supplied in the translation for clarification.
