Judges 20:31

Context
20:31 The Benjaminites attacked 9  the army, leaving the city unguarded. 10  They began to strike down their enemy 11  just as they had done before. On the main roads (one leads to Bethel, 12  the other to Gibeah) and in the field, they struck down 13  about thirty Israelites.

1 tn The words “the doors” are supplied.

2 tn Heb “See, their master, fallen to the ground, dead.”

3 sn The names Oreb and Zeeb, which mean “Raven” and “Wolf” respectively, are appropriate because the Midianites had been like scavengers and predators to Israel.

4 tn The Hebrew text repeats the verb “executed.” This has not been repeated in the translation for stylistic reasons.

5 tn Heb “Midian.”

6 tn Heb “beyond the Jordan.” The word “River” is not in the Hebrew text but has been supplied in the translation for clarity (also in 8:4).

7 tn Or “people.”

8 tn Heb “to do at their arrival in Geba of Benjamin according to all the disgraceful [thing] which he [collective = “Benjamin”] did in Israel.” Here “Geba” must be an error for “Gibeah.”

9 tn Heb “went out to meet.”

10 tn Heb “and they were drawn away from the city.”

11 tn Heb “from the army wounded ones.”

12 map For location see Map4 G4; Map5 C1; Map6 E3; Map7 D1; Map8 G3.

13 tn The words “they struck down” are supplied in the translation for clarification.
