Isaiah 9:7

Context

9:7 His dominion will be vast 1 

and he will bring immeasurable prosperity. 2 

He will rule on David’s throne

and over David’s kingdom, 3 

establishing it 4  and strengthening it

by promoting justice and fairness, 5 

from this time forward and forevermore.

The Lord’s intense devotion to his people 6  will accomplish this.

Isaiah 18:7

Context

18:7 At that time

tribute will be brought to the Lord who commands armies,

by a people that are tall and smooth-skinned,

a people that are feared far and wide,

a nation strong and victorious,

whose land rivers divide. 7 

The tribute 8  will be brought to the place where the Lord who commands armies has chosen to reside, on Mount Zion. 9 

Isaiah 22:25

Context

22:25 “At that time,” 10  says the Lord who commands armies, “the peg fastened into a solid place will come loose. It will be cut off and fall, and the load hanging on it will be cut off.” 11  Indeed, 12  the Lord has spoken.

Who announced it 18  ahead of time, so we could say, ‘He’s correct’?

Indeed, none of them decreed it!

Indeed, none of them announced it!

Indeed, no one heard you say anything!

Isaiah 49:8

Context

49:8 This is what the Lord says:

“At the time I decide to show my favor, I will respond to you;

in the day of deliverance I will help you;

I will protect you 19  and make you a covenant mediator for people, 20 

to rebuild 21  the land 22 

and to reassign the desolate property.

Isaiah 54:9

54:9 “As far as I am concerned, this is like in Noah’s time, 23 

when I vowed that the waters of Noah’s flood 24  would never again cover the earth.

In the same way I have vowed that I will not be angry at you or shout at you.

Isaiah 59:21

Context

59:21 “As for me, this is my promise to 25  them,” says the Lord. “My spirit, who is upon you, and my words, which I have placed in your mouth, will not depart from your mouth or from the mouths of your children and descendants from this time forward,” 26  says the Lord.

Isaiah 65:20

Context

65:20 Never again will one of her infants live just a few days 27 

or an old man die before his time. 28 

Indeed, no one will die before the age of a hundred, 29 

anyone who fails to reach 30  the age of a hundred will be considered cursed.

1 tc The Hebrew text has לְםַרְבֵּה (lÿmarbeh), which is a corrupt reading. לם is dittographic; note the preceding word, שָׁלוֹם (shalom). The corrected text reads literally, “great is the dominion.”

2 tn Heb “and to peace there will be no end” (KJV and ASV both similar). On the political and socio-economic sense of שָׁלוֹם (shalom) in this context, see the note at v. 6 on “Prince of Peace.”

3 tn Heb “over the throne of David, and over his kingdom.” The referent of the pronoun “his” (i.e., David) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

4 tn The feminine singular pronominal suffix on this form and the following one (translated “it” both times) refers back to the grammatically feminine noun “kingdom.”

5 tn Heb “with/by justice and fairness”; ASV “with justice and with righteousness.”

6 tn Heb “the zeal of the Lord.” In this context the Lord’s “zeal” refers to his intense devotion to and love for his people which prompts him to vindicate them and to fulfill his promises to David and the nation.

20 tn Heb “a covenant of people.” A person cannot literally be a covenant; בְּרִית (bÿrit) is probably metonymic here, indicating a covenant mediator. Here עָם (’am, “people”) appears to refer to Israel. See the note at 42:6.

21 tn The Hiphil of קוּם (qum, “arise”) is probably used here in the sense of “rebuild.”

22 tn The “land” probably stands by metonymy for the ruins within it.

23 tc The Hebrew text reads literally, “For [or “indeed”] the waters of Noah [is] this to me.” כִּי־מֵי (ki-me, “for the waters of”) should be emended to כְּמֵי (kÿmey, “like the days of”), which is supported by the Qumran scroll 1QIsaa and all the ancient versions except LXX.

24 tn Heb “the waters of Noah” (so NAB, NIV, NRSV).

25 tn Or “my covenant with” (so many English versions); NCV “my agreement with.”

sn The Lord promises the repentant (note “to them”) that they and their offspring will possess his spirit and function as his spokesmen. In this regard they follow in the footsteps of the Lord’s special servant. See 42:1; 49:2; 51:16.

26 tn Heb “from now and on into the future.”

27 tn Heb “and there will not be from there again a nursing infant of days,” i.e., one that lives just a few days.

28 tn Heb “or an old [man] who does not fill out his days.”

29 tn Heb “for the child as a son of one hundred years will die.” The point seems to be that those who die at the age of a hundred will be considered children, for the average life span will be much longer than that. The category “child” will be redefined in light of the expanded life spans that will characterize this new era.

30 tn Heb “the one who misses.” חָטָא (khata’) is used here in its basic sense of “miss the mark.” See HALOT 305 s.v. חטא. Another option is to translate, “and the sinner who reaches the age of a hundred will be cursed.”
