Isaiah 49:26

Context

49:26 I will make your oppressors eat their own flesh;

they will get drunk on their own blood, as if it were wine. 1

Then all humankind 2  will recognize that

I am the Lord, your deliverer,

your protector, 3  the powerful ruler of Jacob.” 4

Isaiah 60:17

Context

60:17 Instead of bronze, I will bring you gold,

instead of iron, I will bring you silver,

instead of wood, I will bring you 5  bronze,

instead of stones, I will bring you 6  iron.

I will make prosperity 7  your overseer,

and vindication your sovereign ruler. 8

1 sn Verse 26a depicts siege warfare and bloody defeat. The besieged enemy will be so starved they will their own flesh. The bloodstained bodies lying on the blood-soaked battle site will look as if they collapsed in drunkenness.

2 tn Heb “flesh” (so KJV, NASB).

3 tn Heb “your redeemer.” See the note at 41:14.

4 tn Heb “the powerful [one] of Jacob.” See 1:24.

5 tn The words “I will bring you” are supplied in the translation; they are understood by ellipsis (see the preceding lines).

6 tn The words “I will bring you” are supplied in the translation; they are understood by ellipsis (see the first two lines of the verse).

7 tn Or “peace” (KJV and many other English versions).

8 tn The plural indicates degree. The language is ironic; in the past Zion was ruled by oppressive tyrants, but now personified prosperity and vindication will be the only things that will “dominate” the city.
