Isaiah 40:27

Context

40:27 Why do you say, Jacob,

Why do you say, Israel,

“The Lord is not aware of what is happening to me, 1

My God is not concerned with my vindication”? 2

Isaiah 51:8

Context

51:8 For a moth will eat away at them like clothes;

a clothes moth will devour them like wool.

But the vindication I provide 3  will be permanent;

the deliverance I give will last.”

Isaiah 62:1

Context
The Lord Takes Delight in Zion

62:1 “For the sake of Zion I will not be silent;

for the sake of Jerusalem 4  I will not be quiet,

until her vindication shines brightly 5

and her deliverance burns like a torch.”

Isaiah 51:6

Context

51:6 Look up at the sky!

Look at the earth below!

For the sky will dissipate 6  like smoke,

and the earth will wear out like clothes;

its residents will die like gnats.

But the deliverance I give 7  is permanent;

the vindication I provide 8  will not disappear. 9

Isaiah 60:17

Context

60:17 Instead of bronze, I will bring you gold,

instead of iron, I will bring you silver,

instead of wood, I will bring you 10  bronze,

instead of stones, I will bring you 11  iron.

I will make prosperity 12  your overseer,

and vindication your sovereign ruler. 13

Isaiah 61:10

Context

61:10 I 14  will greatly rejoice 15  in the Lord;

I will be overjoyed because of my God. 16

For he clothes me in garments of deliverance;

he puts on me a robe symbolizing vindication. 17

I look like a bridegroom when he wears a turban as a priest would;

I look like a bride when she puts on her jewelry. 18

Isaiah 63:1

Context
The Victorious Divine Warrior

63:1 Who is this who comes from Edom, 19

dressed in bright red, coming from Bozrah? 20

Who 21  is this one wearing royal attire, 22

who marches confidently 23  because of his great strength?

“It is I, the one who announces vindication,

and who is able to deliver!” 24

1 tn Heb “my way is hidden from the Lord” (so NAB, NASB, NIV, NRSV).

2 tn Heb “and from my God my justice passes away”; NRSV “my right is disregarded by my God.”

3 tn Heb “my vindication”; many English versions “my righteousness”; NRSV, TEV “my deliverance”; CEV “my victory.”

4 map For location see Map5 B1; Map6 F3; Map7 E2; Map8 F2; Map10 B3; JP1 F4; JP2 F4; JP3 F4; JP4 F4.

5 tn Heb “goes forth like brightness.”

6 tn Heb “will be torn in pieces.” The perfect indicates the certitude of the event, from the Lord’s rhetorical perspective.

7 tn Heb “my deliverance.” The same Hebrew word can also be translated “salvation” (so KJV, NAB, NASB, NIV, NRSV, NLT); cf. CEV “victory.”

8 tn Heb “my righteousness [or “vindication”].”

9 tn Heb “will not be shattered [or “dismayed”].”

10 tn The words “I will bring you” are supplied in the translation; they are understood by ellipsis (see the preceding lines).

11 tn The words “I will bring you” are supplied in the translation; they are understood by ellipsis (see the first two lines of the verse).

12 tn Or “peace” (KJV and many other English versions).

13 tn The plural indicates degree. The language is ironic; in the past Zion was ruled by oppressive tyrants, but now personified prosperity and vindication will be the only things that will “dominate” the city.

14 sn The speaker in vv. 10-11 is not identified, but it is likely that the personified nation (or perhaps Zion) responds here to the Lord’s promise of restoration.

15 tn The infinitive absolute appears before the finite verb for emphasis.

16 tn Heb “my being is happy in my God”; NAB “in my God is the joy of my soul.”

17 tn Heb “robe of vindication”; KJV, NASB, NIV, NRSV “robe of righteousness.”

18 tn Heb “like a bridegroom [who] acts like a priest [by wearing] a turban, and like a bride [who] wears her jewelry.” The words “I look” are supplied for stylistic reasons and clarification.

19 sn Edom is here an archetype for the Lord’s enemies. See 34:5.

20 tn Heb “[in] bright red garments, from Bozrah.”

21 tn The interrogative particle is understood by ellipsis; note the first line of the verse.

22 tn Heb “honored in his clothing”; KJV, ASV “glorious in his apparel.”

23 tc The Hebrew text has צָעָה (tsaah), which means “stoop, bend” (51:14). The translation assumes an emendation to צָעַד (tsaad, “march”; see BDB 858 s.v. צָעָה).

24 tn Heb “I, [the one] speaking in vindication [or “righteousness”], great to deliver.”
