Isaiah 2:3

Context

2:3 many peoples will come and say,

“Come, let us go up to the Lord’s mountain,

to the temple of the God of Jacob,

so 1  he can teach us his requirements, 2

and 3  we can follow his standards.” 4

For Zion will be the center for moral instruction; 5

the Lord will issue edicts from Jerusalem. 6

Isaiah 9:7

Context

9:7 His dominion will be vast 7

and he will bring immeasurable prosperity. 8

He will rule on David’s throne

and over David’s kingdom, 9

establishing it 10  and strengthening it

by promoting justice and fairness, 11

from this time forward and forevermore.

The Lord’s intense devotion to his people 12  will accomplish this.

Isaiah 14:2

Context
14:2 Nations will take them and bring them back to their own place. Then the family of Jacob will make foreigners their servants as they settle in the Lord’s land. 13  They will make their captors captives and rule over the ones who oppressed them.

Isaiah 23:18

Context
23:18 Her profits and earnings will be set apart for the Lord. They will not be stored up or accumulated, for her profits will be given to those who live in the Lord’s presence and will be used to purchase large quantities of food and beautiful clothes. 14

Isaiah 28:13

Context

28:13 So the Lord’s word to them will sound like

meaningless gibberish,

senseless babbling,

a syllable here, a syllable there. 15

As a result, they will fall on their backsides when they try to walk, 16

and be injured, ensnared, and captured. 17

Isaiah 34:6

Context

34:6 The Lord’s sword is dripping with blood,

it is covered 18  with fat;

it drips 19  with the blood of young rams and goats

and is covered 20  with the fat of rams’ kidneys.

For the Lord is holding a sacrifice 21  in Bozrah, 22

a bloody 23  slaughter in the land of Edom.

Isaiah 49:5

Context

49:5 So now the Lord says,

the one who formed me from birth 24  to be his servant –

he did this 25  to restore Jacob to himself,

so that Israel might be gathered to him;

and I will be honored 26  in the Lord’s sight,

for my God is my source of strength 27

Isaiah 58:13

Context

58:13 You must 28  observe the Sabbath 29

rather than doing anything you please on my holy day. 30

You must look forward to the Sabbath 31

and treat the Lord’s holy day with respect. 32

You must treat it with respect by refraining from your normal activities,

and by refraining from your selfish pursuits and from making business deals. 33

Isaiah 63:7

Context
A Prayer for Divine Intervention

63:7 I will tell of the faithful acts of the Lord,

of the Lord’s praiseworthy deeds.

I will tell about all 34  the Lord did for us,

the many good things he did for the family of Israel, 35

because of 36  his compassion and great faithfulness.

Isaiah 66:20

Context
66:20 They will bring back all your countrymen 37  from all the nations as an offering to the Lord. They will bring them 38  on horses, in chariots, in wagons, on mules, and on camels 39  to my holy hill Jerusalem,” says the Lord, “just as the Israelites bring offerings to the Lord’s temple in ritually pure containers.

1 tn The prefixed verb form with simple vav (ו) introduces a purpose/result clause after the preceding prefixed verb form (probably to be taken as a cohortative; see IBHS 650 §39.2.2a).

2 tn Heb “his ways.” In this context God’s “ways” are the standards of moral conduct he decrees that people should live by.

3 tn The cohortative with vav (ו) after the prefixed verb form indicates the ultimate purpose/goal of their action.

4 tn Heb “walk in his ways.”

5 tn Heb “for out of Zion will go instruction.”

6 tn Heb “the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.”

7 tc The Hebrew text has לְםַרְבֵּה (lÿmarbeh), which is a corrupt reading. לם is dittographic; note the preceding word, שָׁלוֹם (shalom). The corrected text reads literally, “great is the dominion.”

8 tn Heb “and to peace there will be no end” (KJV and ASV both similar). On the political and socio-economic sense of שָׁלוֹם (shalom) in this context, see the note at v. 6 on “Prince of Peace.”

9 tn Heb “over the throne of David, and over his kingdom.” The referent of the pronoun “his” (i.e., David) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

10 tn The feminine singular pronominal suffix on this form and the following one (translated “it” both times) refers back to the grammatically feminine noun “kingdom.”

11 tn Heb “with/by justice and fairness”; ASV “with justice and with righteousness.”

12 tn Heb “the zeal of the Lord.” In this context the Lord’s “zeal” refers to his intense devotion to and love for his people which prompts him to vindicate them and to fulfill his promises to David and the nation.

13 tn Heb “and the house of Jacob will take possession of them [i.e., the nations], on the land of the Lord, as male servants and female servants.”

14 tn Heb “for eating to fullness and for beautiful covering[s].”

sn The point of this verse, which in its blatant nationalism comes precariously close to comparing the Lord to one who controls or manages a prostitute, is that Tyre will become a subject of Israel and her God. Tyre’s commercial profits will be used to enrich the Lord’s people.

15 tn Heb “And the word of the Lord will be to them, ‘tsahv latsahv,’ etc.” See the note at v. 10. In this case the “Lord’s word” is not the foreigner’s strange sounding words (as in v. 10), but the Lord’s repeated appeals to them (like the one quoted in v. 12). As time goes on, the Lord’s appeals through the prophets will have no impact on the people; they will regard prophetic preaching as gibberish.

16 tn Heb “as a result they will go and stumble backward.” Perhaps an infant falling as it attempts to learn to walk is the background image here (cf. v. 9b). The Hebrew term לְמַעַן (lÿmaan) could be taken as indicating purpose (“in order that”), rather than simple result. In this case the people’s insensitivity to the message is caused by the Lord as a means of expediting their downfall.

17 sn When divine warnings and appeals become gibberish to the spiritually insensitive, they have no guidance and are doomed to destruction.

18 tn The verb is a rare Hotpaal passive form. See GKC 150 §54.h.

19 tn The words “it drips” are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.

20 tn The words “and is covered” are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.

21 tn Heb “for there is a sacrifice to the Lord.”

22 sn The Lord’s judgment of Edom is compared to a bloody sacrificial scene.

23 tn Heb “great” (so KJV, NAB, NASB, NIV, NRSV).

24 tn Heb “from the womb” (so KJV, NASB).

25 tn The words “he did this” are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons. In the Hebrew text the infinitive construct of purpose is subordinated to the previous statement.

26 tn The vav (ו) + imperfect is translated here as a result clause; one might interpret it as indicating purpose, “and so I might be honored.”

27 tn Heb “and my God is [perhaps, “having been”] my strength.” The disjunctive structure (vav [ו] + subject + verb) is interpreted here as indicating a causal circumstantial clause.

28 tn Lit., “if you.” In the Hebrew text vv. 13-14 are one long conditional sentence. The protasis (“if” clauses appear in v. 13), with the apodosis (“then” clause) appearing in v. 14.

29 tn Heb “if you turn from the Sabbath your feet.”

30 tn Heb “[from] doing your desires on my holy day.” The Qumran scroll 1QIsaa supplies the preposition מִן (min) on “doing.”

31 tn Heb “and call the Sabbath a pleasure”; KJV, NAB, NASB, NIV, NRSV “a delight.”

32 tn Heb “and [call] the holy [day] of the Lord honored.” On קָדוֹשׁ (qadosh, “holy”) as indicating a time period, see BDB 872 s.v. 2.e (cf. also Neh 8:9-11).

33 tn Heb “and you honor it [by refraining] from accomplishing your ways, from finding your desire and speaking a word.” It is unlikely that the last phrase (“speaking a word”) is a prohibition against talking on the Sabbath; instead it probably refers to making transactions or plans (see Hos 10:4). Some see here a reference to idle talk (cf. 2 Sam 19:30).

34 tn Heb “according to all which.”

35 tn Heb “greatness of goodness to the house of Israel which he did for them.”

36 tn Heb “according to.”

37 tn Heb “brothers” (so NIV); NCV “fellow Israelites.”

38 tn The words “they will bring them” are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.

39 tn The precise meaning of this word is uncertain. Some suggest it refers to “chariots.” See HALOT 498 s.v. *כִּרְכָּרָה.
