Isaiah 12:1-2
Context12:1 At that time 1 you will say:
“I praise you, O Lord,
for even though you were angry with me,
your anger subsided, and you consoled me.
12:2 Look, God is my deliverer! 2
I will trust in him 3 and not fear.
For the Lord gives me strength and protects me; 4
he has become my deliverer.” 5
Isaiah 22:4
Context22:4 So I say:
“Don’t look at me! 6
I am weeping bitterly.
Don’t try 7 to console me
concerning the destruction of my defenseless people.” 8
Isaiah 45:5
Context45:5 I am the Lord, I have no peer, 9
there is no God but me.
I arm you for battle, 10 even though you do not recognize 11 me.
Isaiah 49:4
Context49:4 But I thought, 12 “I have worked in vain;
I have expended my energy for absolutely nothing.” 13
But the Lord will vindicate me;
my God will reward me. 14
Isaiah 50:9
Context50:9 Look, the sovereign Lord helps me.
Who dares to condemn me?
Look, all of them will wear out like clothes;
a moth will eat away at them.
Isaiah 51:4
Context51:4 Pay attention to me, my people!
Listen to me, my people!
For 15 I will issue a decree, 16
I will make my justice a light to the nations. 17
Isaiah 65:19
Context65:19 Jerusalem will bring me joy,
and my people will bring me happiness. 18
The sound of weeping or cries of sorrow
will never be heard in her again.
1 tn Or “in that day” (KJV).
2 tn Or “salvation” (KJV, NIV, NRSV).
3 tn The words “in him” are supplied in the translation for clarification.
4 tc The Hebrew text has, “for my strength and protection [is] the Lord, the Lord (Heb “Yah, Yahweh).” The word יְהוָה (yehvah) is probably dittographic or explanatory here (note that the short form of the name [יָהּ, yah] precedes, and that the graphically similar וַיְהִי [vayÿhi] follows). Exod 15:2, the passage from which the words of v. 2b are taken, has only יָהּ. The word זִמְרָת (zimrat) is traditionally understood as meaning “song,” in which case one might translate, “for the Lord gives me strength and joy” (i.e., a reason to sing); note that in v. 5 the verb זָמַר (zamar, “sing”) appears. Many recent commentators, however, have argued that the noun is here instead a homonym, meaning “protection” or “strength.” See HALOT 274 s.v. III *זמר.
5 tn Or “salvation” (so many English versions, e.g., KJV, NIV, NRSV, NLT); NAB “my savior.”
6 tn Heb “look away from me” (so KJV, ASV, NRSV).
7 tn Heb “don’t hurry” (so NCV).
8 tn Heb “the daughter of my people.” “Daughter” is here used metaphorically to express the speaker’s emotional attachment to his people, as well as their vulnerability and weakness.
9 tn Heb “and there is none besides.” On the use of עוֹד (’od) here, see BDB 729 s.v. 1.c.
10 tn Heb “gird you” (so NASB) or “strengthen you” (so NIV).
11 tn Or “know” (NAB, NCV, NRSV, TEV, CEV, NLT); NIV “have not acknowledged.”
12 tn Or “said” (KJV, NASB, NIV, NRSV); NLT “I replied.”
13 tn Heb “for nothing and emptiness.” Synonyms are combined to emphasize the common idea.
14 tn Heb “But my justice is with the Lord, and my reward [or “wage”] with my God.”
15 tn Or “certainly.”
16 tn Heb “instruction [or “a law”] will go out from me.”
17 tn Heb “and my justice for a light to the nations I will cause to rest.”
18 tn Heb “and I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and be happy in my people.”
