Isaiah 10:4

Context

10:4 You will have no place to go, except to kneel with the prisoners,

or to fall among those who have been killed. 1 

Despite all this, his anger does not subside,

and his hand is ready to strike again. 2

2 tn Heb “in all this his anger was not turned, and still his hand was outstretched”; KJV, ASV, NRSV “his had is stretched out still.”

4 tn Heb “like the glowing heat because of light.” The precise meaning of the line is uncertain.

11 tc The Hebrew text has a third person verb form, which does not agree with the first person suffix that precedes. The form should be emended to יֹסֵד (yosed), a Qal active participle used in a present progressive or imminent future sense.

12 tn Traditionally “tested,” but the implication is that it has passed the test and stands approved.

13 sn The reality behind the metaphor is not entirely clear from the context. The stone appears to represent someone or something that gives Zion stability. Perhaps the ideal Davidic ruler is in view (see 32:1). Another option is that the image of beginning a building project by laying a precious cornerstone suggests that God is about to transform Zion through judgment and begin a new covenant community that will experience his protection (see 4:3-6; 31:5; 33:20-24; 35:10).

14 tn Heb “will not hurry,” i.e., act in panic.

15 tn Or “indeed.”

16 tc The Hebrew text reads literally, “for arranged from before [or “yesterday”] is [?].” The meaning of תָּפְתֶּה (tafÿteh), which occurs only here, is unknown. The translation above (as with most English versions) assumes an emendation to תֹּפֶת (tofet, “Topheth”; cf. NASB, NIV, NLT) and places the final hey (ה) on the beginning of the next word as an interrogative particle. Topheth was a place near Jerusalem used as a burial ground (see Jer 7:32; 19:11).

17 tn The Hebrew text reads literally, “Also it is made ready for the king, one makes it deep and wide.” If one takes the final hey (ה) on תָּפְתֶּה (tafÿteh) and prefixes it to גָּם (gam) as an interrogative particle (see the preceding note), one can translate, “Is it also made ready for the king?” In this case the question is rhetorical and expects an emphatic affirmative answer, “Of course it is!”

18 tn Heb “its pile of wood, fire and wood one makes abundant.”

sn Apparently this alludes to some type of funeral rite.

19 tn Heb “he [in the] exalted places will live.”

20 tn Heb “mountain strongholds, cliffs [will be] his elevated place.”

21 sn See the note on the phrase “the Holy One of Israel” in 1:4.

22 sn Seba is not the same as Sheba in southern Arabia; cf. Gen 1:10; 1 Chr 1:9.

24 tn “In vain” translates תֹהוּ (tohu), used here as an adverbial accusative: “for nothing.”

25 tn The translation above assumes that צֶדֶק (tsedeq) and מֵישָׁרִים (mesharim) are adverbial accusatives (see 33:15). If they are taken as direct objects, indicating the content of what is spoken, one might translate, “who proclaims deliverance, who announces justice.”

26 tn Heb “me.” The singular is collective.

27 tn Heb “draw near to me so I can dwell.”
