Hebrews 1:5

Context
The Son Is Superior to Angels

1:5 For to which of the angels did God 1  ever say, “You are my son! Today I have fathered you”? 2  And in another place 3  he says, 4 I will be his father and he will be my son.” 5

Hebrews 2:17

Context
2:17 Therefore he had 6  to be made like his brothers and sisters 7  in every respect, so that he could become a merciful and faithful high priest in things relating to God, to make atonement 8  for the sins of the people.

Hebrews 3:6

Context
3:6 But Christ 9  is faithful as a son over God’s 10  house. We are of his house, 11  if in fact we hold firmly 12  to our confidence and the hope we take pride in. 13

Hebrews 6:10

Context
6:10 For God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the love you have demonstrated for his name, in having served and continuing to serve the saints.

Hebrews 7:21

Hebrews 9:25-26

Context
9:25 And he did not enter to offer 18  himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the sanctuary year after year with blood that is not his own, 9:26 for then he would have had to suffer again and again since the foundation of the world. But now he has appeared once for all at the consummation of the ages to put away sin by his sacrifice.

Hebrews 11:5

Context
11:5 By faith Enoch was taken up so that he did not see death, and he was not to be found because God took him up. For before his removal he had been commended as having pleased God.

Hebrews 11:23

Context

11:23 By faith, when Moses was born, his parents hid him 19  for three months, because they saw the child was beautiful and they were not afraid of the king’s edict.

1 tn Grk “he”; the referent (God) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

2 tn Grk “I have begotten you.”

sn A quotation from Ps 2:7.

3 tn Grk “And again,” quoting another OT passage.

4 tn The words “he says” are not in the Greek text but are supplied to make a complete English sentence. In the Greek text this is a continuation of the previous sentence, but English does not normally employ such long and complex sentences.

5 tn Grk “I will be a father to him and he will be a son to me.”

sn A quotation from 2 Sam 7:14 (cf. 1 Chr 17:13).

6 tn Or “he was obligated.”

7 tn Grk “brothers.” See note on the phrase “brothers and sisters” in 2:11.

8 tn Or “propitiation.”

9 sn The Greek makes the contrast between v. 5 and v. 6a more emphatic and explicit than is easily done in English.

10 tn Grk “his”; in the translation the referent (God) has been specified for clarity.

11 tn Grk “whose house we are,” continuing the previous sentence.

12 tc The reading adopted by the translation is found in Ì13,46 B sa, while the vast majority of mss (א A C D Ψ 0243 0278 33 1739 1881 Ï latt) add μέχρι τέλους βεβαίαν (mecri telou" bebaian, “secure until the end”). The external evidence for the omission, though minimal, has excellent credentials. Considering the internal factors, B. M. Metzger (TCGNT 595) finds it surprising that the feminine adjective βεβαίαν should modify the neuter noun καύχημα (kauchma, here translated “we take pride”), a fact that suggests that even the form of the word was borrowed from another place. Since the same phrase occurs at Heb 3:14, it is likely that later scribes added it here at Heb 3:6 in anticipation of Heb 3:14. While these words belong at 3:14, they seem foreign to 3:6.

13 tn Grk “the pride of our hope.”

14 tn Grk “he”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

15 tn The words “did so” are not in the Greek text, but are implied.

16 sn A quotation from Ps 110:4 (see Heb 5:6, 6:20, and 7:17).

17 tn This verb occurs in the Greek middle voice, which here intensifies the role of the subject, Christ, in accomplishing the action: “he alone secured”; “he and no other secured.”

18 tn Grk “and not that he might offer,” continuing the previous construction.

19 tn Grk “Moses, when he was born, was hidden by his parents.”
