1 tn Heb “and they said to him.” In context this is best understood as an exclamation.
2 tn Heb “and Jacob said when he saw them.”
3 sn The name Mahanaim apparently means “two camps.” Perhaps the two camps were those of God and of Jacob.
4 tn Heb “and the anger of Jacob was hot.”
5 tn Heb “who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb.”
6 sn A wild animal has eaten him. Jacob draws this conclusion on his own without his sons actually having to lie with their words (see v. 20). Dipping the tunic in the goat’s blood was the only deception needed.
7 tn Heb “What is this you have done to us?” The Hebrew demonstrative pronoun “this” adds emphasis: “What in the world have you done to us?” (R. J. Williams, Hebrew Syntax, 24, §118).
8 tn Heb “people.”
9 tn The Hebrew verb means “to lie down.” Here the expression “lie with” or “sleep with” is euphemistic for “have sexual relations with.”
