1 tn The Hebrew word סָרִיס (saris), used here of these two men and of Potiphar (see 39:1), normally means “eunuch.” But evidence from Akkadian texts shows that in early times the title was used of a court official in general. Only later did it become more specialized in its use.

2 tn Heb “sins, offenses.” He probably refers here to the offenses that landed him in prison (see 40:1).

3 tn Heb “and he gave his voice in weeping,” meaning that Joseph could not restrain himself and wept out loud.

4 tn Heb “and the Egyptians heard and the household of Pharaoh heard.” Presumably in the latter case this was by means of a report.

5 tn Heb “and from the whole of his brothers he took five men and presented them before Pharaoh.”

6 tn Heb “he made you swear on oath.”
