Genesis 34:17

Context
34:17 But if you do not agree to our terms 6  by being circumcised, then we will take 7  our sister 8  and depart.”

1 tn Heb “when every one of our males is circumcised.”

2 tn Heb “This is my covenant that you must keep between me and you and your descendants after you.”

3 sn For a discussion of male circumcision as the sign of the covenant in this passage see M. V. Fox, “The Sign of the Covenant: Circumcision in the Light of the Priestly ‘ot Etiologies,” RB 81 (1974): 557-96.

4 tn Heb “Isaac his son, the son of eight days.” The name “Isaac” is repeated in the translation for clarity.

5 sn Just as God had commanded him to do. With the birth of the promised child, Abraham obeyed the Lord by both naming (Gen 17:19) and circumcising Isaac (17:12).

6 tn Heb “listen to us.”

7 tn The perfect verbal form with the vav (ו) consecutive introduces the apodosis of the conditional sentence.

8 tn Heb “daughter.” Jacob’s sons call Dinah their daughter, even though she was their sister (see v. 8). This has been translated as “sister” for clarity.
