Context

31:55 (32:1) 8  Early in the morning Laban kissed 9  his grandchildren 10  and his daughters goodbye and blessed them. Then Laban left and returned home. 11

1 tn Heb “Isaac”; the proper name has been replaced by the pronoun (“he”) in the translation for stylistic reasons.

2 tn The meaning of this Hebrew term is uncertain (cf. NASB, NIV “to meditate”; NRSV “to walk”).

3 tn Heb “at the turning of the evening.”

4 tn Heb “And he lifted up his eyes.” This idiom emphasizes the careful look Isaac had at the approaching caravan.

5 tn Heb “and look.” The clause introduced by the particle הִנֵּה (hinneh, “look”) invites the audience to view the scene through Isaac’s eyes.

6 tn Heb “and they got up early and they swore an oath, a man to his brother.”

7 tn Heb “and they went from him in peace.”

8 sn Beginning with 31:55, the verse numbers in the English Bible through 32:32 differ by one from the verse numbers in the Hebrew text (BHS), with 31:55 ET = 32:1 HT, 32:1 ET = 32:2 HT, etc., through 32:32 ET = 32:33 HT. From 33:1 the verse numbers in the ET and HT are again the same.

9 tn Heb “and Laban got up early in the morning and he kissed.”

10 tn Heb “his sons.”

11 tn Heb “to his place.”
