Genesis 24:6

Context

24:6 “Be careful 1  never to take my son back there!” Abraham told him. 2

Genesis 34:9

Context
34:9 Intermarry with us. 3  Let us marry your daughters, and take our daughters as wives for yourselves. 4

Genesis 43:13

Context
43:13 Take your brother too, and go right away 5  to the man. 6

1 tn Heb “guard yourself.”

2 tn The introductory clause “And Abraham said to him” has been moved to the end of the opening sentence of direct discourse in the translation for stylistic reasons.

3 tn Heb “form marriage alliances with us.”

sn Intermarry with us. This includes the idea of becoming allied by marriage. The incident foreshadows the temptations Israel would eventually face when they entered the promised land (see Deut 7:3; Josh 23:12).

4 tn Heb “Give your daughters to us, and take our daughters for yourselves.” In the translation the words “let…marry” and “as wives” are supplied for clarity.

5 tn Heb “arise, return,” meaning “get up and go back,” or “go back immediately.”

6 sn The man refers to the Egyptian official, whom the reader or hearer of the narrative knows is Joseph. In this context both the sons and Jacob refer to him simply as “the man” (see vv. 3-7).
