Deuteronomy 7:25

7:25 You must burn the images of their gods, but do not covet the silver and gold that covers them so much that you take it for yourself and thus become ensnared by it; for it is abhorrent 1  to the Lord your God.

Deuteronomy 22:19

Context
22:19 They will fine him one hundred shekels of silver and give them to the young woman’s father, for the man who made the accusation 2  ruined the reputation 3  of an Israelite virgin. She will then become his wife and he may never divorce her as long as he lives.

Deuteronomy 24:4

Context
24:4 her first husband who divorced her is not permitted to remarry 4  her after she has become ritually impure, for that is offensive to the Lord. 5  You must not bring guilt on the land 6  which the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance.

Deuteronomy 30:16

30:16 What 7  I am commanding you today is to love the Lord your God, to walk in his ways, and to obey his commandments, his statutes, and his ordinances. Then you will live and become numerous and the Lord your God will bless you in the land which you are about to possess. 8 

Deuteronomy 31:20

31:20 For after I have brought them 9  to the land I promised to their 10  ancestors – one flowing with milk and honey – and they 11  eat their fill 12  and become fat, then they 13  will turn to other gods and worship them; they will reject me and break my covenant.

1 tn The Hebrew word תּוֹעֵבָה (toevah, “abhorrent; detestable”) describes anything detestable to the Lord because of its innate evil or inconsistency with his own nature and character. Frequently such things (or even persons) must be condemned to annihilation (חֵרֶם, kherem) lest they become a means of polluting or contaminating others (cf. Deut 13:17; 20:17-18). See M. Grisanti, NIDOTTE 4:315.

2 tn Heb “for he”; the referent (the man who made the accusation) has been specified in the translation to avoid confusion with the young woman’s father, the last-mentioned male.

3 tn Heb “brought forth a bad name.”

4 tn Heb “to return to take her to be his wife.”

5 sn The issue here is not divorce and its grounds per se but prohibition of remarriage to a mate whom one has previously divorced.

6 tn Heb “cause the land to sin” (so KJV, ASV).

7 tc A number of LXX mss insert before this verse, “if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God,” thus translating אֲשֶׁר (’asher) as “which” and the rest as “I am commanding you today, to love,” etc., “then you will live,” etc.

8 tn Heb “which you are going there to possess it.” This has been simplified in the translation for stylistic reasons.

9 tn Heb “him.” Smr, LXX, and the Targums read the plural “them.” See note on the first occurrence of “they” in v. 16.
