Respect for Others’ Property

23:19 You must not charge interest on a loan to your fellow Israelite, 8  whether on money, food, or anything else that has been loaned with interest.

1 tc The translation follows the Qere or marginal reading; the Kethib (consonantal text) has the singular, “his son.”

2 tn Heb “all his people.”

3 tn Heb “any evil blemish”; NASB “any (+ other NAB, TEV) serious defect.”

4 tn Heb “his neighbor.”

5 tn Heb “rises against him and strikes him fatally.”

6 tn Heb “your brother” (also in v. 4).

7 tn Heb “you must not hide yourself.”

8 tn Heb “to your brother” (likewise in the following verse). Since this is not limited to actual siblings, “fellow Israelite” is used in the translation (cf. NAB, NASB “countrymen”).
