Deuteronomy 1:4
Context1:4 This took place after the defeat 1 of King Sihon 2 of the Amorites, whose capital was 3 in Heshbon, 4 and King Og of Bashan, whose capital was 5 in Ashtaroth, 6 specifically in Edrei. 7
Deuteronomy 8:9
Context8:9 a land where you may eat food 8 in plenty and find no lack of anything, a land whose stones are iron 9 and from whose hills you can mine copper.
1 tn Heb “when he struck [or “smote”].”
3 tn Heb “who lived.”
4 sn Heshbon is probably modern Tell Hesban, about 7.5 mi (12 km) south southwest of Amman, Jordan.
5 tn Heb “who lived.”
6 sn Ashtaroth is probably Tell àAshtarah, about 22 mi (35 km) due east of the Sea of Galilee.
7 sn Edrei is probably modern Deràa, 60 mi (95 km) south of Damascus (see Num 21:33; Josh 12:4; 13:12, 31).
8 tn The Hebrew term may refer to “food” in a more general sense (cf. NASB, NCV, NLT) or “bread” in particular (cf. NAB, NIV, NRSV).
9 sn A land whose stones are iron. Since iron deposits are few and far between in Palestine, the reference here is probably to iron ore found in mines as opposed to the meteorite iron more commonly known in that area.
