Deuteronomy 3:18

Deuteronomy 6:1

Context
Exhortation to Keep the Covenant Principles

6:1 Now these are the commandments, 6  statutes, and ordinances that the Lord your God instructed me to teach you so that you may carry them out in the land where you are headed 7

1 tn Heb “in” or “on.” Here there is a contrast between the ordinary time of eleven days (v. 2) and the actual time of forty years, so “not until” brings out that vast disparity.

2 sn The eleventh month is Shebat in the Hebrew calendar, January/February in the modern (Gregorian) calendar.

3 sn The fortieth year would be 1406 b.c. according to the “early” date of the exodus. See E. H. Merrill, Kingdom of Priests, 66-75.

4 tn Heb “according to all which.”

5 tn Heb “your brothers, the sons of Israel.”

6 tn Heb “commandment.” The word מִצְוָה (mitsvah) again is in the singular, serving as a comprehensive term for the whole stipulation section of the book. See note on the word “commandments” in 5:31.

7 tn Heb “where you are going over to possess it” (so NASB); NRSV “that you are about to cross into and occupy.”
