Deuteronomy 1:17

Context
1:17 They 1  must not discriminate in judgment, but hear the lowly 2  and the great alike. Nor should they be intimidated by human beings, for judgment belongs to God. If the matter being adjudicated is too difficult for them, they should bring it before me for a hearing.

Deuteronomy 4:10

Context
4:10 You 3  stood before the Lord your God at Horeb and he 4  said to me, “Assemble the people before me so that I can tell them my commands. 5  Then they will learn to revere me all the days they live in the land, and they will instruct their children.”

Deuteronomy 28:51

Context
28:51 They 6  will devour the offspring of your livestock and the produce of your soil until you are destroyed. They will not leave you with any grain, new wine, olive oil, calves of your herds, 7  or lambs of your flocks 8  until they have destroyed you.

Deuteronomy 31:20

Context
31:20 For after I have brought them 9  to the land I promised to their 10  ancestors – one flowing with milk and honey – and they 11  eat their fill 12  and become fat, then they 13  will turn to other gods and worship them; they will reject me and break my covenant.

1 tn Heb “you,” and throughout the verse (cf. NASB, NRSV).

2 tn Heb “the small,” but referring to social status, not physical stature.

3 tn The text begins with “(the) day (in) which.” In the Hebrew text v. 10 is subordinate to v. 11, but for stylistic reasons the translation treats v. 10 as an independent clause, necessitating the omission of the subordinating temporal phrase at the beginning of the verse.

4 tn Heb “the Lord.” See note on “he” in 4:3.

5 tn Heb “my words.” See v. 13; in Hebrew the “ten commandments” are the “ten words.”

6 tn Heb “it” (so NRSV), a collective singular referring to the invading nation (several times in this verse and v. 52).

7 tn Heb “increase of herds.”

8 tn Heb “growth of flocks.”

9 tn Heb “him.” Smr, LXX, and the Targums read the plural “them.” See note on the first occurrence of “they” in v. 16.

10 tn Heb “his.” Smr, LXX, and the Targums read the plural “their.” See note on the first occurrence of “they” in v. 16.

11 tn Heb “he.” Smr, LXX, and the Targums read the plural “they.” See note on the first occurrence of “they” in v. 16.

12 tn Heb “and are satisfied.”

13 tn Heb “he.” Smr, LXX, and the Targums read the plural “they.” See note on the first occurrence of “they” in v. 16.
