Daniel 2:25

Context

2:25 So Arioch quickly ushered Daniel into the king’s presence, saying to him, “I 1  have found a man from the captives of Judah who can make known the interpretation to the king.”

Daniel 4:6

Context
4:6 So I issued an order 2  for all the wise men of Babylon to be brought 3  before me so that they could make known to me the interpretation of the dream.

Daniel 5:15

Context
5:15 Now the wise men and 4  astrologers were brought before me to read this writing and make known to me its interpretation. But they were unable to disclose the interpretation of the message.

Daniel 5:17

Context
Daniel Interprets the Handwriting on the Wall

5:17 But Daniel replied to the king, “Keep your gifts, and give your rewards to someone else! However, I will read the writing for the king and make known its 5  interpretation.

Daniel 11:18

Context
11:18 Then he will turn his attention 6  to the coastal regions and will capture many of them. But a commander 7  will bring his shameful conduct to a halt; in addition, 8  he will make him pay for his shameful conduct. 9

1 sn Arioch’s claim is self-serving and exaggerated. It is Daniel who came to him, and not the other way around. By claiming to have found one capable of solving the king’s dilemma, Arioch probably hoped to ingratiate himself to the king.

2 tn Aram “from me there was placed a decree.”

3 tn The Aramaic infinitive here is active.

4 tn The Aramaic text does not have “and.” The term “astrologers” is either an appositive for “wise men” (cf. KJV, NKJV, ASV, RSV, NRSV), or the construction is to be understood as asyndetic (so the translation above).

5 tn Or “the.”

6 tn Heb “his face.” See v. 19 as well.

7 sn The commander is probably the Roman commander, Lucius Cornelius Scipio.

8 tn The Hebrew here is difficult in that the negative בִּלְתִּי (biltiy, “not”) is used in an unusual way. The sense is not entirely clear.

9 tn Heb “his shameful conduct he will return to him.”
