Acts 7:42

Context
7:42 But God turned away from them and gave them over 1  to worship the host 2  of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: ‘It was not to me that you offered slain animals and sacrifices 3  forty years in the wilderness, was it, 4  house of Israel?

Acts 9:17

Context
9:17 So Ananias departed and entered the house, placed 5  his hands on Saul 6  and said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you came here, 7  has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” 8

Acts 22:5

Context
22:5 as both the high priest and the whole council of elders 9  can testify about me. From them 10  I also received 11  letters to the brothers in Damascus, and I was on my way 12  to make arrests there and bring 13  the prisoners 14  to Jerusalem 15  to be punished.

Acts 25:24

Context
25:24 Then Festus 16  said, “King Agrippa, 17  and all you who are present here with us, you see this man about whom the entire Jewish populace 18  petitioned 19  me both in Jerusalem 20  and here, 21  shouting loudly 22  that he ought not to live any longer.

1 sn The expression and gave them over suggests similarities to the judgment on the nations described by Paul in Rom 1:18-32.

2 tn Or “stars.”

sn To worship the hosts of heaven. Their action violated Deut 4:19; 17:2-5. See Ps 106:36-43.

3 tn The two terms for sacrifices “semantically reinforce one another and are here combined essentially for emphasis” (L&N 53.20).

4 tn The Greek construction anticipates a negative reply which is indicated in the translation by the ‘tag’ question, “was it?”

5 tn Grk “and placing his hands on Saul, he said.” The participle ἐπιθείς (epiqei") has been translated as a finite verb due to requirements of contemporary English style. For the same reason καί (kai) has not been translated before the participle.

6 tn Grk “on him”; the referent (Saul) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

7 tn Grk “on the road in which you came,” but the relative clause makes for awkward English style, so it was translated as a temporal clause (“as you came here”).

8 sn Be filled with the Holy Spirit. Here someone who is not an apostle (Ananias) commissions another person with the Spirit.

9 tn That is, the whole Sanhedrin. BDAG 861 s.v. πρεσβυτέριον has “an administrative group concerned with the interests of a specific community, council of elders – a. of the highest Judean council in Jerusalem, in our lit. usu. called συνέδριονὁ ἀρχιερεύς καὶ πᾶν τὸ πρ. Ac 22:5.”

10 tn Grk “from whom.” Because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, the relative pronoun (“whom”) was translated by the third person plural pronoun (“them”) and a new sentence begun in the translation.

11 tn Grk “receiving.” The participle δεξάμενος (dexameno") has been translated as a finite verb due to requirements of contemporary English style.

12 tn Grk “letters to the brothers, [and] I was going to Damascus.” Such a translation, however, might be confusing since the term “brother” is frequently used of a fellow Christian. In this context, Paul is speaking about fellow Jews.

13 tn Grk “even there and bring…” or “there and even bring…” The ascensive καί (kai) shows that Paul was fervent in his zeal against Christians, but it is difficult to translate for it really belongs with the entire idea of arresting and bringing back the prisoners.

14 tn BDAG 221 s.v. δέω 1.b has “δεδεμένον ἄγειν τινά bring someone as prisonerAc 9:2, 21; 22:5.”

15 tn Grk “I was going…to bring even those who were there to Jerusalem as prisoners that they might be punished.”

16 sn See the note on Porcius Festus in 24:27.

17 sn See the note on King Agrippa in 25:13.

18 tn Probably best understood as rhetorical hyperbole. BDAG 825 s.v. πλῆθος 2.b.γ states, “people, populace, populationτὸ πλῆθος the populaceἅπαν τὸ πλ. τῶν ᾿Ιουδαίων Ac 25:24.” However, the actions of the leadership are seen by Luke as representing the actions of the entire nation, so the remark is not inaccurate.

19 tn Or “appealed to” (BDAG 341 s.v. ἐντυγχάνω 1.a).

21 sn Here means “here in Caesarea.”

22 tn Or “screaming.”
