25:7 When he arrived, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem stood around him, 1  bringing many serious 2  charges that they were not able to prove. 3

18:14 But just as Paul was about to speak, 4  Gallio said to the Jews, “If it were a matter of some crime or serious piece of villainy, 5  I would have been justified in accepting the complaint 6  of you Jews, 7 

1 tn BDAG 801 s.v. περιίστημι 1.a has “περιέστησαν αὐτὸν οἱ ᾿Ιουδαῖοι the Judeans stood around him 25:7.”

2 tn Grk “many and serious.” The term βαρύς (barus) refers to weighty or serious charges (BDAG 167 s.v. 1).

3 tn The term ἀποδείκνυμι (apodeiknumi) in a legal context refers to legal proof (4 Macc 1:8; BDAG 108 s.v. 3).

4 tn Grk “about to open his mouth” (an idiom).

5 tn BDAG 902 s.v. ῥᾳδιούργημα states, “From the sense ‘prank, knavery, roguish trick, slick deed’ it is but a short step to that of a serious misdeed, crime, villainy…a serious piece of villainy Ac 18:14 (w. ἀδίκημα).”

6 tn According to BDAG 78 s.v. ἀνέχω 3 this is a legal technical term: “Legal t.t. κατὰ λόγον ἂν ἀνεσχόμην ὑμῶν I would have been justified in accepting your complaint Ac 18:14.”

7 tn Grk “accepting your complaint, O Jews.”
