Acts 5:12

Context
The Apostles Perform Miraculous Signs and Wonders

5:12 Now many miraculous signs 4  and wonders came about among the people through the hands of the apostles. By 5  common consent 6  they were all meeting together in Solomon’s Portico. 7

Acts 5:26

Context
5:26 Then the commander 8  of the temple guard 9  went with the officers 10  and brought the apostles 11  without the use of force 12  (for they were afraid of being stoned by the people). 13

Acts 8:1

8:1 And Saul agreed completely with killing 14  him.

Saul Begins to Persecute the Church

Now on that day a great 15  persecution began 16  against the church in Jerusalem, 17  and all 18  except the apostles were forced to scatter throughout the regions 19  of Judea and Samaria.

Acts 15:22

Context

15:22 Then the apostles and elders, with the whole church, decided 20  to send men chosen from among them, Judas called Barsabbas and Silas, 21  leaders among the brothers, to Antioch 22  with Paul and Barnabas.

Acts 16:4

Context
16:4 As they went through the towns, 23  they passed on 24  the decrees that had been decided on by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem 25  for the Gentile believers 26  to obey. 27

1 tn Grk “to them”; the referent (the apostles) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

2 sn After his suffering is a reference to Jesus’ crucifixion and the abuse which preceded it.

3 tn Grk “during forty days.” The phrase “over a forty-day period” is used rather than “during forty days” because (as the other NT accounts of Jesus’ appearances make clear) Jesus was not continually visible to the apostles during the forty days, but appeared to them on various occasions.

4 tn The miraculous nature of these signs is implied in the context.

5 tn Grk “And by.” Because of the difference between Greek style, which often begins sentences or clauses with “and,” and English style, which generally does not, καί (kai) has not been translated here.

6 tn Or “With one mind.”

7 tn Or “colonnade”; Grk “stoa.”

sn Solomons Portico was a covered walkway formed by rows of columns supporting a roof and open on the inner side facing the center of the temple complex. Located beside the Court of the Gentiles, it was a very public area.

8 tn Or “captain.”

9 tn Grk “the official [of the temple],” a title for the commander of the Jewish soldiers guarding the temple (thus the translation, “the commander of the temple guard”). See L&N 37.91.

10 tn The Greek term ὑπηρέτης (Juphreth") generally means “servant,” but in the NT is used for many different types of servants. See the note on the word “officers” in v. 22.

11 tn Grk “brought them”; the referent (the apostles) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

12 tn Or “without violence.” It is clear, as well, that the apostles did not resist arrest.

13 tn Grk “for they feared lest they be stoned by the people.” The translation uses a less awkward English equivalent. This is an explanatory note by the author.

14 tn The term ἀναίρεσις (anairesi") can refer to murder (BDAG 64 s.v.; 2 Macc 5:13; Josephus, Ant. 5.2.12 [5.165]).

15 tn Or “severe.”

16 tn Grk “Now there happened on that day a great persecution.” It is less awkward to say in English “Now on that day a great persecution began.”

18 sn All. Given that the Jerusalem church is still active after this and that the Hellenists are the focus of Acts 6-8, it is possible to argue that only the Hellenistic Christians were forced to scatter.

19 tn Or “countryside.”

20 tn BDAG 255 s.v. δοκέω 2.b.β lists this verse under the meaning “it seems best to me, I decide, I resolve.”

21 sn Silas. See 2 Cor 1:19; 1 Thess 1:1; 2 Thess 1:1 (= Silvanus).

22 sn Antioch was a city in Syria (not Antioch in Pisidia).

23 tn Or “cities.”

24 tn BDAG 762-63 s.v. παραδίδωμι 3 has “they handed down to them the decisions to observe Ac 16:4.”

25 map For location see Map5 B1; Map6 F3; Map7 E2; Map8 F2; Map10 B3; JP1 F4; JP2 F4; JP3 F4; JP4 F4.

26 tn Grk “for them”; the referent (Gentile believers) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

27 tn Or “observe” or “follow.”
