2 Samuel 12:18

Context

12:18 On the seventh day the child died. But the servants of David were afraid to inform him that the child had died, for they said, “While the child was still alive he would not listen to us 1  when we spoke to him. How can we tell him that the child is dead? He will do himself harm!” 2

2 Samuel 15:20

Context
15:20 It seems like you arrived just yesterday. Today should I make you wander around by going with us? I go where I must go. But as for you, go back and take your men 3  with you. May genuine loyal love 4  protect 5  you!”

2 Samuel 19:6

Context
19:6 You seem to love your enemies and hate your friends! For you have as much as declared today that leaders and servants don’t matter to you. I realize now 6  that if 7  Absalom were alive and all of us were dead today, 8  it would be all right with you.

2 Samuel 21:17

Context
21:17 But Abishai the son of Zeruiah came to David’s aid, striking the Philistine down and killing him. Then David’s men took an oath saying, “You will not go out to battle with us again! You must not extinguish the lamp of Israel!”

1 tn Heb “to our voice.”

2 tn Heb “he will do harm.” The object is not stated in the Hebrew text. The statement may be intentionally vague, meaning that he might harm himself or them!

3 tn Heb “brothers,” but see v. 22.

4 tn Heb “loyal love and truth.” The expression is a hendiadys.

5 tn Heb “be with.”

6 tn Heb “today.”

7 tc The translation follows the Qere, 4QSama, and many medieval Hebrew mss in reading לוּ (lu, “if”) rather than MT לֹא (lo’, “not”).

8 tc The Lucianic Greek recension and Syriac Peshitta lack “today.”
