2 Kings 8:27

Context
8:27 He followed in the footsteps of Ahab’s dynasty and did evil in the sight of 1  the Lord, like Ahab’s dynasty, for he was related to Ahab’s family. 2

2 Kings 9:7

Context
9:7 You will destroy the family of your master Ahab. 3  I will get revenge against Jezebel for the shed blood of my servants the prophets and for the shed blood of all the Lord’s servants. 4

2 Kings 13:6

Context
13:6 But they did not repudiate 5  the sinful ways of the family 6  of Jeroboam, who encouraged Israel to sin; they continued in those sins. 7  There was even an Asherah pole 8  standing in Samaria.

1 tn Heb “in the eyes of.”

2 tn Heb “and he walked in the way of the house of Ahab and did evil in the eyes of the Lord like the house of Ahab, for he was a relative by marriage of the house of Ahab.” For this use of חֲתַן (khatan), normally “son-in-law,” see HALOT 365 s.v. חָתָן. Ahab was Ahaziah’s grandfather on his mother’s side.

3 tn Or “strike down the house of Ahab your master.”

4 tn Heb “I will avenge the shed blood of my servants the prophets and the shed blood of all the servants of the Lord from the hand of Jezebel.”

5 tn Heb “they did not turn away from.”

6 tn Heb “house.”

7 tc Heb “in it he walked.” The singular verb (הָלַךְ, halakh) is probably due to an error of haplography and should be emended to the plural (הָלְכּוּ, halÿku). Note that a vav immediately follows (on the form וְגַם, vÿgam).

8 tn Or “an image of Asherah”; ASV, NASB “the Asherah”; NCV “the Asherah idol.”

sn Asherah was a leading deity of the Canaanite pantheon, wife/sister of El and goddess of fertility. She was commonly worshiped at shrines in or near groves of evergreen trees, or, failing that, at places marked by wooden poles. These were to be burned or cut down (Deut 12:3; 16:21; Judg 6:25, 28, 30; 2 Kgs 18:4).
