tn Or “the spirit of the Lord.”

tn Heb “he”; the referent (Elisha) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

tn Or “What do we have in common?” The text reads literally, “What to me and to you?”

tn Heb “a wife from among the wives of the sons of the prophets.”

 tn Or “cried out.”

tn Heb “your servant feared the Lord.” “Fear” refers here to obedience and allegiance, the products of healthy respect for the Lord’s authority.

tn Heb “and he saw, and look.”

tn Heb “Get up and go, you and your house, and live temporarily where you can live temporarily.”

 tn Heb “said to.”

tn Heb “Because you have done well by doing what is proper in my eyes – according to all which was in my heart you have done to the house of Ahab – sons of four generations will sit for you on the throne of Israel.” In the Hebrew text the Lord’s statement is one long sentence (with a parenthesis). The translation above divides it into shorter sentences for stylistic reasons.

sn Jehu ruled over Israel from approximately 841-814 b.c. Four of his descendants (Jehoahaz, Jehoash, Jeroboam II, and Zechariah) ruled from approximately 814-753 b.c. The dynasty came to an end when Shallum assassinated Zechariah in 753 b.c. See 2 Kgs 15:8-12.

tn Heb “Jehoiada sent and took.”

sn The Carians were apparently a bodyguard, probably comprised of foreigners. See HALOT 497 s.v. כָּרִי and M. Cogan and H. Tadmor, II Kings (AB), 126.

 tn Heb “the runners.”

tn Heb “he brought them to himself.”

 tn Or “covenant.”

tn The words “I place at your disposal” are added in the translation for clarification.

tn Heb “the silver of passing over a man.” The precise meaning of the phrase is debated, but עָבַר (’avar), “pass over,” probably refers here to counting, suggesting the reference is to a census conducted for taxation purposes. See M. Cogan and H. Tadmor, II Kings (AB), 137.

tn Heb “the silver of persons, his valuation.” The precise meaning of the phrase is uncertain, but parallels in Lev 27 suggest that personal vows are referred to here. See M. Cogan and H. Tadmor, II Kings (AB), 137.

tn Heb “all the silver which goes up on the heart of a man to bring to the house of the Lord.”

tn Heb “he”; the referent (Elisha) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

 tn Heb “He opened [it].”

 tn Heb “and he shot.”

tn Heb “he”; the referent (Elisha) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

tn Heb “The arrow of victory of the Lord and the arrow of victory over Syria.”

tn Heb “you will strike down Syria in Aphek until destruction.”

tn Heb “as it is written in the scroll of the law of Moses which the Lord commanded, saying.”

tn Heb “on account of sons.”

tn Heb “on account of fathers.”

sn This law is recorded in Deut 24:16.

tn Heb “obey my commandments and rules according to all the law which I commanded your fathers and which I sent to you by the hand of my servants the prophets.”

sn See the note at 2 Kgs 17:16.

 tn Or “served.”

tn Heb “Because your heart was tender.”

tn Heb “how I said concerning this place and its residents to become [an object of] horror and [an example of] a curse.” The final phrase (“horror and a curse”) refers to Judah becoming a prime example of an accursed people. In curse formulations they would be held up as a prime example of divine judgment. For an example of such a curse, see Jer 29:22.

tn Heb “the priests of the second [rank],” that is, those ranked just beneath Hilkiah.

 tn Or “doorkeepers.”

 tn Heb “for.”

tn Heb “all the host of heaven” (also in v. 5).

tn Heb “he”; the referent (the king) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

tn Or “fields.” For a defense of the translation “terraces,” see M. Cogan and H. Tadmor, II Kings (AB), 285.
