2 Chronicles 6:26

Context

6:26 “The time will come when 1  the skies 2  are shut up tightly and no rain falls because your people 3  sinned against you. When they direct their prayers toward this place, renew their allegiance to you, 4  and turn away from their sin because you punish 5  them,

2 Chronicles 6:28

Context

6:28 “The time will come when the land suffers from a famine, a plague, blight, and disease, or a locust 6  invasion, or when their enemy lays siege to the cities of the land, 7  or when some other type of plague or epidemic occurs.

2 Chronicles 6:36

Context

6:36 “The time will come when your people 8  will sin against you (for there is no one who is sinless!) and you will be angry at them and deliver them over to their enemies, who will take them as prisoners to their land, whether far away or close by.

2 Chronicles 7:3

Context
7:3 When all the Israelites saw the fire come down and the Lord’s splendor over the temple, they got on their knees with their faces downward toward the pavement. They worshiped and gave thanks to the Lord, saying, 9  “Certainly he is good; certainly his loyal love endures!”

2 Chronicles 30:5

Context
30:5 So they sent an edict 10  throughout Israel from Beer Sheba to Dan, summoning the people 11  to come and observe a Passover for the Lord God of Israel in Jerusalem, for they had not observed it on a nationwide scale as prescribed in the law. 12

1 tn Heb “when.” In the Hebrew text vv. 26-27a actually contain one lengthy conditional sentence, which the translation has divided into two sentences for stylistic reasons.

2 tn Or “heavens” (also in v. 12). The Hebrew term שָׁמַיִם (shamayim) may be translated “heaven(s)” or “sky” depending on the context.

3 tn Heb “they.”

4 tn Heb “confess [or perhaps, “praise”] your name.”

5 tn The Hebrew text reads “because you answer them,” as if the verb is from עָנָה (’anah, “answer”). However, this reference to a divine answer is premature, since the next verse asks for God to intervene in mercy. It is better to revocalize the consonantal text as תְעַנֵּם (tÿannem, “you afflict them”), a Piel verb form from the homonym עָנָה (“afflict”).

6 tn Actually two Hebrew words appear here, both of which are usually (but not always) taken as referring to locusts. Perhaps different stages of growth or different varieties are in view, but this is uncertain. NEB has “locusts new-sloughed or fully grown”; NASB has “locust or grasshopper”; NIV has “locusts or grasshoppers”; NRSV has “locust, or caterpillar.”

7 tn Heb “in the land, his gates.”

8 tn Heb “they”; the referent (God’s people) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

9 tn The word “saying” is supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.

10 tn Heb “and they caused to stand a word to cause a voice to pass through.”

11 tn The words “summoning the people” are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.

12 tn Heb “because not for abundance had they done as written.”
