tn Heb “and Solomon son of David strengthened himself over his kingdom.”

tn The disjunctive clause (note the vav [ו] + subject pattern) probably has a causal nuance here.

sn Beginning with 2:1, the verse numbers through 2:18 in the English Bible differ from the verse numbers in the Hebrew text (BHS), with 2:1 ET = 1:18 HT, 2:2 ET = 2:1 HT, 2:3 ET = 2:2 HT, etc., through 2:18 ET = 2:17 HT. Beginning with 3:1 the verse numbers in the ET and HT are again the same.

tn Heb “and Solomon said to build a house for the name of the Lord and house for his kingship.”

tn The words “O Lord” do not appear in the Hebrew text, but they are supplied in the translation for clarification; Solomon addresses the Lord in prayer at this point.

tn Heb “and it was with the heart of David my father to build a house for the name of the Lord God of Israel.”

sn On the significance of the Lord’s “name,” see the note on the word “live” in v. 5.

tn Or “prove to be reliable.”

tc Heb “do not turn away the face of your anointed ones.” Many medieval Hebrew mss, as well as the ancient versions, read the singular, “your anointed,” which would probably refer to Solomon specifically, rather than the people.

tn Heb “and the strength of Jeroboam was not retained again in the days of Abijah.”

 tn Heb “fathers.”

tn Heb “the law and the command.”

tn Heb “entered into a covenant.”

 tn Heb “fathers.”

tn Heb “yet the heart of Asa was complete all his days.”

tn Heb “established the kingdom in his hand.”

tn Heb “and he had wealth and honor in abundance.”

tn Heb “and his heart was high in the ways of the Lord.” Perhaps גָּבַהּ (gavah, “be high”) here means “be cheerful” (HALOT 171 s.v.) or “be encouraged” (BDB 147 s.v. 3.a).

tn Heb “and the terror of the Lord was upon all the kingdoms of the lands which were surrounding Judah.”

tn Heb “This you must do with the fear of the Lord, with honesty, and with a complete heart.”

tn Heb “Judah.” The words “the men of” are supplied in the translation for clarity. The Hebrew text uses the name “Judah” by metonymy for the men of Judah.

tn Heb “arose to praise the Lord God of Israel with a very loud voice.”

tn Heb “he walked in the way of his father Asa and did not turn from it, doing what is right in the eyes of the Lord.”

tn Heb “to strike with a great striking.”

tn Heb “and the king said [it] and they made a chest and placed it in the gate of the house of the Lord outside.”

tn Heb “and the number of burnt sacrifices which the assembly brought was seventy bulls, one hundred rams, two hundred lambs; for a burnt sacrifice to the Lord were all these.”

tn Heb “as Manasseh his father had humbled himself.”

tn Heb “for he, Amon, multiplied guilt.”

tn Heb “according to the word of the Lord by the hand of Moses.”
