Context

2:3 Don’t keep speaking so arrogantly, 1 

letting proud talk come out of your mouth!

For the Lord is a God who knows;

1 tn Heb “proudly, proudly.” If MT is original, the repetition of the word is for emphasis, stressing the arrogance of those addressed. However, a few medieval Hebrew manuscripts and some other textual witnesses do not reflect the repetition, suggesting that the Hebrew text may be dittographic.

2 tc The MT (Qere) reads “and by him actions are weighed.” The translation assumes that reading of the Qere וְלוֹ (vÿlo, “and by him”), which is supported by many medieval Hebrew mss, is correct, rather than the reading of the Kethib וְלוֹא (vÿlo’, “and not”).

3 tc For “these” the LXX has “of the Lord” (κυρίου, kuriou), perhaps through the influence of the final phrase of v. 24 (“the people of the Lord”). Somewhat less likely is the view that the MT reading is due to a distorted dittography of the first word of v. 24. The Vulgate lacks the word.

4 tn The Hebrew text adds “so that” here, formally connecting this clause with the next.

5 tn Heb “he”; the referent (Eli) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

6 tn Heb “what is good in his eyes.”

7 tn Heb “and now, listen to their voice.”

8 tn The infinitive absolute appears before the imperative for emphasis.

9 tn Heb “and tell them the manner of the king who will rule over them.”

10 tn The second masculine plural forms in this quotation indicate that Nahash and his army are addressed.

11 tn Heb “according to all that is good in your eyes.”

12 tn Heb “say”; KJV, NRSV “name”; NIV “indicate.”

13 tn Heb “according to all which he spoke, the good concerning you.”

14 tn Heb “appoint.”
