1 Kings 8:36

8:36 then listen from heaven and forgive the sin of your servants, your people Israel. Certainly 1  you will then teach them the right way to live 2  and send rain on your land that you have given your people to possess. 3

8:39 then listen from your heavenly dwelling place, forgive their sin, 4  and act favorably toward each one based on your evaluation of his motives. 5  (Indeed you are the only one who can correctly evaluate the motives of all people.) 6

22:52 He did evil in the sight of 10  the Lord and followed in the footsteps 11  of his father and mother; like Jeroboam son of Nebat, he encouraged Israel to sin. 12 

1 tn The translation understands כִּי (ki) in an emphatic or asseverative sense.

2 tn Heb “the good way in which they should walk.”

3 tn Or “for an inheritance.”

4 tn The words “their sin” are added for clarification.

5 tn Heb “and act and give to each one according to all his ways because you know his heart.” In the Hebrew text vv. 37-39a actually contain one lengthy conditional sentence, which the translation has divided up for stylistic reasons.

6 tn Heb “Indeed you know, you alone, the heart of all the sons of mankind.”

7 tn The Hebrew text has “because” at the beginning of the sentence. In the Hebrew text vv. 2-3 are one sentence comprised of a causal clause giving the reason for divine punishment (v. 2) and the main clause announcing the punishment (v. 3). The translation divides this sentence for stylistic reasons.

8 tn Heb “walked in the way of Jeroboam.”

9 tn Heb “angering me by their sins.”

10 tn Heb “in the eyes of.”

11 tn Or “way.”

12 tn Heb “and walked in the way of his father and in the way of his mother and in the way of Jeroboam son of Nebat who made Israel sin.”
