1 Kings 8:1

Context
Solomon Moves the Ark into the Temple

8:1 1 Then Solomon convened in Jerusalem 2  Israel’s elders, all the leaders of the Israelite tribes and families, so they could witness the transferal of the ark of the Lord’s covenant from the city of David (that is, Zion). 3

1 Kings 8:64

Context
8:64 That day the king consecrated the middle of the courtyard that is in front of the Lord’s temple. He offered there burnt sacrifices, grain offerings, and the fat from the peace offerings, because the bronze altar that stood before the Lord was too small to hold all these offerings. 4

1 Kings 10:9

Context
10:9 May the Lord your God be praised because he favored 5  you by placing you on the throne of Israel! Because of the Lord’s eternal love for Israel, he made you king so you could make just and right decisions.” 6

1 Kings 13:6

Context
13:6 The king pled with 7  the prophet, 8  “Seek the favor of 9  the Lord your God and pray for me, so that my hand may be restored.” So the prophet sought the Lord’s favor 10  and the king’s hand was restored to its former condition. 11

1 Kings 13:18

Context
13:18 The old prophet then said, 12  “I too am a prophet like you. An angel told me with the Lord’s authority, 13  ‘Bring him back with you to your house so he can eat and drink.’” 14  But he was lying to him. 15

1 Kings 15:18

Context
15:18 Asa took all the silver and gold that was left in the treasuries of the Lord’s temple and of the royal palace and handed it to his servants. He then told them to deliver it 16  to Ben Hadad son of Tabrimmon, the son of Hezion, king of Syria, ruler in Damascus, along with this message:

1 Kings 18:12

Context
18:12 But when I leave you, the Lord’s spirit will carry you away so I can’t find you. 17  If I go tell Ahab I’ve seen you, he won’t be able to find you and he will kill me. 18  That would not be fair, 19  because your servant has been a loyal follower of 20  the Lord from my youth.

1 Kings 22:8

Context
22:8 The king of Israel answered Jehoshaphat, “There is still one man through whom we can seek the Lord’s will. 21  But I despise 22  him because he does not prophesy prosperity for me, but disaster. His name is Micaiah son of Imlah. 23  Jehoshaphat said, “The king should not say such things.”

1 tc The Old Greek translation includes the following words at the beginning of ch. 8: “It so happened that when Solomon finished building the Lord’s temple and his own house, after twenty years.”

3 tn Heb “Then Solomon convened the elders of Israel, the heads of the tribes, the chiefs of the fathers belonging to the sons of Israel to King Solomon [in] Jerusalem to bring up the ark of the covenant of the Lord from the city of David (it is Zion).”

4 tn Heb “to hold the burnt sacrifices, grain offerings, and the fat of the peace offerings.”

5 tn Or “delighted in.”

6 tn Heb “to do justice and righteousness.”

7 tn Heb “The king answered and said to.”

8 tn Heb “the man of God” (a second time later in this verse, and once in v. 7 and v. 8).

9 tn Heb “appease the face of.”

10 tn Heb “appeased the face of the Lord.

11 tn Heb “and it was as in the beginning.”

12 tn Heb “and he said to him.”

13 tn Heb “by the word of the Lord.

14 tn Heb “eat food and drink water.”

15 tn Or “deceiving him.”

sn He was lying to him. The motives and actions of the old prophet are difficult to understand. The old man’s response to the prophet’s death (see vv. 26-32) suggests he did not trick him with malicious intent. The old prophet probably wanted the honor of entertaining such a celebrity, or perhaps simply desired some social interaction with a fellow prophet.

16 tn Heb “King Asa sent it.”

17 tn Heb “to [a place] which I do not know.”

18 tn Heb “and I will go to inform Ahab and he will not find you and he will kill me.”

19 tn The words “that would not be fair” are added to clarify the logic of Obadiah’s argument.

20 tn Heb “has feared the Lord” (also see the note at 1 Kgs 18:3).

21 tn Heb “to seek the Lord from him.”

22 tn Or “hate.”

23 tn The words “his name is” are supplied for stylistic reasons.
