Deuteronomy 2:19
2:19 But when you come close to the Ammonites, do not harass or provoke them because I am not giving you any of the Ammonites’ land as your possession; I have already given it to Lot’s descendants 1 as their possession.
Deuteronomy 4:10
4:10 You 2 stood before the Lord your God at Horeb and he 3 said to me, “Assemble the people before me so that I can tell them my commands. 4 Then they will learn to revere me all the days they live in the land, and they will instruct their children.”
Deuteronomy 7:25
7:25 You must burn the images of their gods, but do not covet the silver and gold that covers them so much that you take it for yourself and thus become ensnared by it; for it is abhorrent 5 to the Lord your God.
Deuteronomy 9:5
9:5 It is not because of your righteousness, or even your inner uprightness, 6 that you have come here to possess their land. Instead, because of the wickedness of these nations the Lord your God is driving them out ahead of you in order to confirm the promise he 7 made on oath to your ancestors, 8 to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
Deuteronomy 14:29
14:29 Then the Levites (because they have no allotment or inheritance with you), the resident foreigners, the orphans, and the widows of your villages may come and eat their fill so that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work you do.
Deuteronomy 26:12
Presentation of the Third-year Tithe
26:12 When you finish tithing all 9 your income in the third year (the year of tithing), you must give it to the Levites, the resident foreigners, the orphans, and the widows 10 so that they may eat to their satisfaction in your villages. 11
Deuteronomy 31:7
31:7 Then Moses called out to Joshua 12 in the presence of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you will accompany these people to the land that the Lord promised to give their ancestors, 13 and you will enable them to inherit it.
Deuteronomy 31:21
31:21 Then when 14 many disasters and distresses overcome them 15 this song will testify against them, 16 for their 17 descendants will not forget it. 18 I know the 19 intentions they have in mind 20 today, even before I bring them 21 to the land I have promised.”
1 sn Lot’s descendants. See note on this phrase in Deut 2:9.
2 tn The text begins with “(the) day (in) which.” In the Hebrew text v. 10 is subordinate to v. 11, but for stylistic reasons the translation treats v. 10 as an independent clause, necessitating the omission of the subordinating temporal phrase at the beginning of the verse.
3 tn Heb “the Lord.” See note on “he” in 4:3.
4 tn Heb “my words.” See v. 13; in Hebrew the “ten commandments” are the “ten words.”
5 tn The Hebrew word תּוֹעֵבָה (to’evah, “abhorrent; detestable”) describes anything detestable to the Lord because of its innate evil or inconsistency with his own nature and character. Frequently such things (or even persons) must be condemned to annihilation (חֵרֶם, kherem) lest they become a means of polluting or contaminating others (cf. Deut 13:17; 20:17-18). See M. Grisanti, NIDOTTE 4:315.
6 tn Heb “uprightness of your heart” (so NASB, NRSV). The Hebrew word צְדָקָה (tsÿdaqah, “righteousness”), though essentially synonymous here with יֹשֶׁר (yosher, “uprightness”), carries the idea of conformity to an objective standard. The term יֹשֶׁר has more to do with an inner, moral quality (cf. NAB, NIV “integrity”). Neither, however, was grounds for the Lord’s favor. As he states in both vv. 4-5, the main reason he allowed Israel to take this land was the sinfulness of the Canaanites who lived there (cf. Gen 15:16).
7 tn Heb “the Lord.” See note on “he” in 9:3.
8 tn Heb “fathers.”
9 tn Heb includes “the tithes of.” This has not been included in the translation to avoid redundancy.
10 tn The terms “Levite, resident foreigner, orphan, and widow” are collective singulars in the Hebrew text (also in v. 13).
11 tn Heb “gates.”
12 tn The Hebrew text includes “and said to him.” This has not been included in the translation for stylistic reasons.
13 tn Heb “fathers” (also in v. 20).
14 tn Heb “Then it will come to pass that.”
15 tn Heb “him.” Smr, LXX, and the Targums read the plural “them.” See note on the first occurrence of “they” in v. 16.
16 tn Heb “him.” Smr, LXX, and the Targums read the plural “them.” See note on the first occurrence of “they” in v. 16.
17 tn Heb “his.” Smr, LXX, and the Targums read the plural “their.” See note on the first occurrence of “they” in v. 16.
18 tn Heb “it will not be forgotten from the mouth of his seed.”
19 tn Heb “his.” Smr, LXX, and the Targums read the plural “their.” See note on the first occurrence of “they” in v. 16.
20 tn Heb “which he is doing.”
21 tn Heb “him.” Smr, LXX, and the Targums read the plural “them.” See note on the first occurrence of “they” in v. 16.
