Then I directed the Levites to purify themselves and come and guard the gates in order to keep the Sabbath day holy. For this please remember me, O my God, and have pity on me in keeping with your great love.
Grain is crushed, though one certainly does not thresh it forever. The wheel of one’s wagon rolls over it, but his horses do not crush it.
You did not bring me lambs for your burnt offerings; you did not honor me with your sacrifices. I did not burden you with offerings; I did not make you weary by demanding 1 incense.
The children of your oppressors will come bowing to you; all who treated you with disrespect will bow down at your feet. They will call you, ‘The City of the Lord, Zion of the Holy One of Israel.’ 1
For this is what the Lord says: “Look, I am ready to extend to her prosperity that will flow like a river, the riches of nations will flow into her like a stream that floods its banks. 1 You will nurse from her breast 2 and be carried at her side; you will play on her knees.
I said, 1 “Oh, mother, how I regret 2 that you ever gave birth to me! I am always starting arguments and quarrels with the people of this land. 3 I have not lent money to anyone and I have not borrowed from anyone. Yet all of these people are treating me with contempt.” 4
“‘Sure to be judged 1 is the king who builds his palace using injustice and treats people unfairly while adding its upper rooms. 2 He makes his countrymen work for him for nothing. He does not pay them for their labor.
Does it make you any more of a king that you outstrip everyone else in 1 building with cedar? Just think about your father. He was content that he had food and drink. 2 He did what was just and right. 3 So things went well with him.
“You have surely noticed what these people are saying, haven’t you? They are saying, 1 ‘The Lord has rejected the two families of Israel and Judah 2 that he chose.’ So they have little regard that my people will ever again be a nation. 3
I will punish those people who have violated their covenant with me. I will make them like the calf they cut in two and passed between its pieces. 1 I will do so because they did not keep the terms of the covenant they made in my presence. 2
א (Alef) Alas! 1 The Lord 2 has covered Daughter Zion 3 with his anger. 4 He has thrown down the splendor of Israel from heaven to earth; he did not protect 5 his temple 6 when he displayed his anger. 7
Then you will know that I am the Lord, when I deal with you for the sake of my reputation and not according to your wicked conduct and corrupt deeds, O house of Israel, declares the sovereign Lord.’”
therefore, as surely as I live, declares the sovereign Lord, I will deal with you according to your anger, and according to your envy, by which you acted spitefully against them. I will reveal myself to them when I judge you.
As you rejoiced over the inheritance of the house of Israel because it was desolate, so will I deal with you – you will be desolate, Mount Seir, and all of Edom – all of it! Then they will know that I am the Lord.’”
My people, recall how King Balak of Moab planned to harm you, 1 how Balaam son of Beor responded to him. Recall how you journeyed from Shittim to Gilgal, so you might acknowledge that the Lord has treated you fairly.” 2
