Now the priests would always treat the people in the following way: 1 Whenever anyone was making a sacrifice, while the meat was boiling, the priest’s attendant would come with a three-pronged fork 2 in his hand.
So the Lord said to Solomon, “Because you insist on doing these things and have not kept the covenantal rules I gave you, 1 I will surely tear the kingdom away from you and give it to your servant.
When Jehoram saw Jehu, he asked, “Is everything all right, Jehu?” He replied, “How can everything be all right as long as your mother Jezebel promotes idolatry and pagan practices?” 1
Indeed, O Lord, 1 you have abandoned your people, the descendants of Jacob. For diviners from the east are everywhere; 2 they consult omen readers like the Philistines do. 3 Plenty of foreigners are around. 4
Then you will call out, and the Lord will respond; you will cry out, and he will reply, ‘Here I am.’ You must 1 remove the burdensome yoke from among you and stop pointing fingers and speaking sinfully.
But they must make sure you learn to follow the religious practices of my people. 1 Once they taught my people to swear their oaths using the name of the god Baal. 2 But then, they must swear oaths using my name, saying, “As surely as the Lord lives, I swear.” 3 If they do these things, 4 then they will be included among the people I call my own. 5
While you were feeling secure I gave you warning. 1 But you said, “I refuse to listen to you.” That is the way you have acted from your earliest history onward. 2 Indeed, you have never paid attention to me.
He said through them, 1 ‘Each of you must turn from your wicked ways and stop doing the evil things you are doing. 2 If you do, I will allow you to continue to live here in the land that I gave to you and your ancestors as a lasting possession. 3
So do not listen to your prophets or to those who claim to predict the future by divination, 1 by dreams, by consulting the dead, 2 or by practicing magic. They keep telling you, ‘You do not need to be 3 subject to the king of Babylon.’
“Yet you say, ‘Why should the son not suffer 1 for his father’s iniquity?’ When the son does what is just and right, and observes all my statutes and carries them out, he will surely live.
“But if the wicked person turns from all the sin he has committed and observes all my statutes and does what is just and right, he will surely live; he will not die.
Then you will know that I am the Lord, when I deal with you for the sake of my reputation and not according to your wicked conduct and corrupt deeds, O house of Israel, declares the sovereign Lord.’”
When they placed their threshold by my threshold and their doorpost by my doorpost, with only the wall between me and them, they profaned my holy name by the abominable deeds they committed. So I consumed them in my anger.
They will not come near me to serve me as priest, nor will they come near any of my holy things, the things which are most sacred. They will bear the shame of the abominable deeds they have committed.
“‘This is what the sovereign Lord says: Enough, you princes of Israel! Put away violence and destruction, and do what is just and right. Put an end to your evictions of my people, 1 declares the sovereign Lord.
