Romans 8:23

Context
8:23 Not only this, but we ourselves also, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, 1  groan inwardly as we eagerly await our adoption, 2  the redemption of our bodies. 3

1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Context
6:19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, 4  whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 6:20 For you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God with your body.

1 tn Or “who have the Spirit as firstfruits.” The genitive πνεύματος (pneumatos) can be understood here as possessive (“the firstfruits belonging to the Spirit”) although it is much more likely that this is a genitive of apposition (“the firstfruits, namely, the Spirit”); cf. TEV, NLT.

2 tn See the note on “adoption” in v. 15.

3 tn Grk “body.”

4 tn Grk “the ‘in you’ Holy Spirit.” The position of the prepositional phrase ἐν ὑμῖν (en Jumin, “in you”) between the article and the adjective effectively places the prepositional phrase in first attributive position. Such constructions are generally translated into English as relative clauses.
