Matthew 9:11

When the Pharisees ¹  saw this they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” ² 

When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and ‘sinners’?"

When the Pharisees saw this, they said to His disciples, "Why is your Teacher eating with the tax collectors and sinners?"

The Pharisees were indignant. "Why does your teacher eat with such scum?" they asked his disciples.

When the Pharisees saw him keeping this kind of company, they had a fit, and lit into Jesus' followers. "What kind of example is this from your Teacher, acting cozy with crooks and riff-raff?"

And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to his disciples, Why does your Master take food with tax-farmers and sinners?

When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?"

And when the Pharisees saw it , they said to His disciples, "Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?"

² sn The issue here is inappropriate associations. Jews were very careful about personal associations and contact as a matter of ritual cleanliness. Their question borders on an accusation that Jesus is ritually unclean.
