Luke 19:20

Then another ¹  slave ²  came and said, ‘Sir, here is ³  your mina that I put away for safekeeping ⁴  in a piece of cloth. ⁵ 

"Then another servant came and said, ‘Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth.

"Another came, saying, ‘Master, here is your mina, which I kept put away in a handkerchief;

"But the third servant brought back only the original amount of money and said, ‘I hid it and kept it safe.

"The next servant said, 'Master, here's your money safe and sound. I kept it hidden in the cellar.

And another came, saying, Lord, here is your pound, which I put away in a cloth;

Then the other came, saying, ‘Lord, here is your pound. I wrapped it up in a piece of cloth,

"Then another came, saying, ‘Master, here is your mina, which I have kept put away in a handkerchief.

Then another ¹  slave ²  came and said, ‘Sir, here is ³  your mina that I put away for safekeeping ⁴  in a piece of cloth. ⁵ 

¹ sn Though ten were given minas, the story stops to focus on the one who did nothing with the opportunity given to him. Here is the parable’s warning about the one who does not trust the master. This figure is called “another,” marking him out as different than the first two.

² tn The word “slave” is not in the Greek text, but has been supplied for stylistic reasons.

⁴ tn Or “that I stored away.” L&N 85.53 defines ἀπόκειμαι (apokeimai) here as “to put something away for safekeeping – ‘to store, to put away in a safe place.’”

⁵ tn The piece of cloth, called a σουδάριον (soudarion), could have been a towel, napkin, handkerchief, or face cloth (L&N 6.159).
