John 5:16

Now because Jesus was doing these things ¹  on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders ²  began persecuting ³  him.

So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jews persecuted him.

For this reason the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because He was doing these things on the Sabbath.

So the Jewish leaders began harassing Jesus for breaking the Sabbath rules.

That is why the Jews were out to get Jesus--because he did this kind of thing on the Sabbath.

And for this reason the Jews were turned against Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath.

Therefore the Jews started persecuting Jesus, because he was doing such things on the sabbath.

For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath.

Now because Jesus was doing these things ¹  on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders ²  began persecuting ³  him.

¹ sn Note the plural phrase these things which seems to indicate that Jesus healed on the Sabbath more than once (cf. John 20:30). The synoptic gospels show this to be true; the incident in 5:1-15 has thus been chosen by the author as representative.
