Their wine is snakes’ poison, the deadly venom of cobras.

He sucks the poison ¹  of serpents; ²  the fangs ³  of a viper ⁴  kill him.

Their venom is like that of a snake, ¹  like a deaf serpent ²  that does not hear, ³ 

But no human being can subdue the tongue; it is a restless ¹  evil, full of deadly poison.

For the arrows ¹  of the Almighty ²  are within me; my spirit ³  drinks their poison; ⁴  God’s sudden terrors ⁵  are arrayed ⁶  against me.

For their vine is from the stock ¹  of Sodom, and from the fields of Gomorrah. ²  Their grapes contain venom, their clusters of grapes are bitter.

They put bitter poison ¹  into my food, and to quench my thirst they give me vinegar to drink. ² 

Their tongues wound like a serpent; ¹  a viper’s ²  venom is behind ³  their lips. (Selah)

They will be starved by famine, eaten by plague, and bitterly stung; ¹  I will send the teeth of wild animals against them, along with the poison of creatures that crawl in the dust.

So then, listen to what I, the Lord God of Israel who rules over all, ¹  say. ²  ‘I will make these people eat the bitter food of suffering and drink the poison water of judgment. ³ 

They ¹  utter empty words, ²  taking ³  false oaths and making empty ⁴  agreements. Therefore legal disputes sprout up like poisonous weeds ⁵  in the furrows of a plowed field.

Can horses run on rocky cliffs? Can one plow the sea with oxen? ¹  Yet you have turned justice into a poisonous plant, and the fruit of righteous actions into a bitter plant. ² 

“Their throats are open graves, ¹  they deceive with their tongues, the poison of asps is under their lips.” ² 

So the Lord sent poisonous ¹  snakes ²  among the people, and they bit the people; many people of Israel died.

But the Jews who refused to believe ¹  stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds ²  against the brothers.

they will pick up snakes with their hands, and whatever poison they drink will not harm them; ¹  they will place their hands on the sick and they will be well.”

Afterward ¹  it bites like a snake, and stings like a viper.

ז (Zayin) Remember ¹  my impoverished and homeless condition, ²  which is a bitter poison. ³ 

his food is turned sour ¹  in his stomach; ²  it becomes the venom of serpents ³  within him.

Beware that the heart of no man, woman, clan, or tribe among you turns away from the Lord our God today to pursue and serve the gods of those nations; beware that there is among you no root producing poisonous and bitter fruit. ¹
