Neither should there be vulgar speech, foolish talk, or coarse jesting – all of which are out of character – but rather thanksgiving.

They made him jealous with other gods, ¹  they enraged him with abhorrent idols. ²

They set up their disgusting idols in the temple which I have claimed for my own ¹  and defiled it.

He was so wicked he worshiped the disgusting idols, ¹  just like the Amorites ²  whom the Lord had driven out from before the Israelites.)

He did evil in the sight of ¹  the Lord, but not to the same degree as his father and mother. He did remove the sacred pillar of Baal that his father had made.

My enemies’ taunts cut into me to the bone, ¹  as they say to me all day long, “Where is your God?” ² 

Rise up, O God! Defend your honor! ¹  Remember how fools insult you all day long! ² 

For your hands are stained with blood and your fingers with sin; your lips speak lies, your tongue utters malicious words.
