But when the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he was very rich. ¹ 

he has filled the hungry with good things, ¹  and has sent the rich away empty. ² 

“But woe ¹  to you who are rich, for you have received ²  your comfort ³  already.

Now ¹  a man named Zacchaeus was there; he was a chief tax collector ²  and was rich.

Jesus ¹  looked up ²  and saw the rich putting their gifts into the offering box. ³ 

But God, being rich in mercy, because of his great love with which he loved us,

Come now, you rich! Weep and cry aloud ¹  over the miseries that are coming on you.

For you know the grace ¹  of our Lord Jesus Christ, that although he was rich, he became poor for your sakes, so that you by his poverty could become rich.

But at this statement, the man ¹  looked sad and went away sorrowful, for he was very rich. ² 

He then ¹  told them a parable: ²  “The land of a certain rich man produced ³  an abundant crop,

So it is with the one who stores up riches for himself, ¹  but is not rich toward God.”

“There was a rich man who dressed in purple ¹  and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously ²  every day.

So ¹  the rich man ²  said, ‘Then I beg you, father – send Lazarus ³  to my father’s house

Then ¹  the rich man ²  said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone from the dead ³  goes to them, they will repent.’

When Jesus noticed this, ¹  he said, “How hard ²  it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God! ³ 

For you were made rich ¹  in every way in him, in all your speech and in every kind of knowledge ²  –

as sorrowful, but always rejoicing, as poor, but making many rich, as having nothing, and yet possessing everything.

Tell them to do good, ¹  to be rich in good deeds, to be generous givers, sharing with others. ² 

But you have dishonored the poor! ¹  Are not the rich oppressing you and dragging you into the courts?

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “I tell you the truth, ¹  it will be hard for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven!
