Then the high priest said, “Are these things true?” ¹ 

Annas the high priest was there, and Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and others who were members of the high priest’s family. ¹ 

Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “Why do we still need witnesses?

Now ¹  while Zechariah ²  was serving as priest before God when his division was on duty, ³ 

Then ¹  one of them ²  struck the high priest’s slave, ³  cutting off his right ear.

While this was happening, ¹  the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching. ² 

Then Annas sent him, still tied up, ¹  to Caiaphas the high priest. ² 

(Now seven sons of a man named ¹  Sceva, a Jewish high priest, were doing this.) ² 

Those standing near him ¹  said, “Do you dare insult ²  God’s high priest?”

and he was designated ¹  by God as high priest in the order of Melchizedek. ² 

And this is even clearer if another priest arises in the likeness of Melchizedek,

and since we have a great priest ¹  over the house of God,

Simon Peter and another disciple followed them as they brought Jesus to Annas. ¹  (Now the other disciple ²  was acquainted with the high priest, and he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard.) ³ 

When Jesus ¹  had said this, one of the high priest’s officers who stood nearby struck him on the face and said, ²  “Is that the way you answer the high priest?”

One of the bystanders drew his sword and struck the high priest’s slave, ¹  cutting off his ear.

Now ¹  while Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the high priest’s slave girls ²  came by.

Then one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said, ¹  “You know nothing at all!

When they had brought them, they stood them before the council, ¹  and the high priest questioned ²  them,

Meanwhile Saul, still breathing out threats ¹  to murder ²  the Lord’s disciples, went to the high priest

At that ¹  the high priest Ananias ordered those standing near ²  Paul ³  to strike ⁴  him on the mouth.
