“If a man opens a pit or if a man digs a pit and does not cover it, and an ox or a donkey falls into it,

then you plunge me into a slimy pit ¹  and my own clothes abhor me.

who delivers ¹  your life from the Pit, ²  who crowns you with his loyal love and compassion,

for a prostitute is like ¹  a deep pit; a harlot ²  is like ³  a narrow well. ⁴ 

But you were brought down ¹  to Sheol, to the remote slopes of the pit. ² 

Terror, pit, and snare are ready to overtake you inhabitants of the earth! ¹ 

They shut me ¹  up in a pit and threw stones at me.

ק (Qof) I have called on your name, O Lord, from the deepest pit. ¹ 

The nations fell ¹  into the pit they had made; their feet were caught in the net they had hidden. ² 

You will not abandon me ¹  to Sheol; ²  you will not allow your faithful follower ³  to see ⁴  the Pit. ⁵ 

I did not harm them, but they hid a net to catch me and dug a pit to trap me. ¹ 

You place me in the lowest regions of the pit, ¹  in the dark places, in the watery depths.

We will swallow them alive ¹  like Sheol, ²  those full of vigor ³  like those going down to the Pit.

The one who is tormented ¹  by the murder ²  of another will flee to the pit; ³  let no one support him.

The nations – the surrounding regions – attacked him. They threw their net over him; he was caught in their pit.

They will bring you down to the pit, and you will die violently ¹  in the heart of the seas.

the owner of the pit must repay ¹  the loss. He must give money ²  to its owner, and the dead animal ³  will become his.

They and all that they had went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed over them. So they perished from among the community.

“What ¹  profit is there in taking my life, ²  in my descending into the Pit? ³  Can the dust of the grave ⁴  praise you? Can it declare your loyalty? ⁵
